Sport <strong>and</strong> Exercise Studies, A.S. Degree<br />

Program Design<br />

This program is designed for students interested in transferring to a baccalaureate<br />

college or university in preparation for opportunities as physical education<br />

teachers, athletic trainers, corporate fitness coordinators, wellness coordinators,<br />

recreation majors <strong>and</strong> coaches. The program may be used by students<br />

who choose to complete an associate degree <strong>and</strong> then obtain employment.<br />

Curriculum<br />

Students may select a full- or part-time plan, attending day or evening. The<br />

program includes six core courses that apply specifically to sport <strong>and</strong> exercise<br />

studies, eleven liberal arts <strong>and</strong> science courses with an emphasis on the sciences,<br />

<strong>and</strong> seven elective courses. Students who complete the program will<br />

receive certificates in adult CPR, st<strong>and</strong>ard first aid, sport injury module, <strong>and</strong><br />

coaching from the state of Connecticut.<br />

Learning Outcomes<br />

Upon successful completion of all Sport <strong>and</strong> Exercise Studies degree program<br />

requirements, graduates will<br />

1. Underst<strong>and</strong> the basic concepts of fitness, health <strong>and</strong> wellness.<br />

2. Prepare an exercise prescription for an individual beginning an exercise<br />

program.<br />

3. Underst<strong>and</strong> the basic concepts of nutrition, as they relate to carbohydrates,<br />

fats, <strong>and</strong> proteins, <strong>and</strong> the functions of each within the human<br />

body.<br />

4. Identify the skills necessary to administer basic first aid <strong>and</strong> emergency<br />

care.<br />

5. Identify the skills necessary to prepare athletes, with stretching exercises,<br />

<strong>and</strong> taping techniques, in order to assist in the prevention of<br />

athletic injuries.<br />

6. Underst<strong>and</strong> the techniques of coaching <strong>and</strong> the basic principles<br />

involved.<br />

7. Identify the skills necessary to assist individuals in making personal<br />

health style changes as they relate to overall health <strong>and</strong> wellness.<br />

8. Utilize a computer in all aspects of their future career.<br />

9. Prepare clear, concise written reports related to assessing individual<br />

needs in fitness, health <strong>and</strong> wellness.<br />

10. Present oral reports on fitness, health <strong>and</strong> wellness to community <strong>and</strong><br />

business groups.<br />

In addition, the graduate will complete the comprehensive learning outcomes<br />

identified with the General Education Component.<br />
