Gerontology, Certificate<br />
Program Design<br />
The Gerontology Certificate Program is designed for persons who seek shortterm<br />
academic <strong>and</strong> in-service professional development, <strong>and</strong> for those with<br />
experience working with senior citizens or who have an academic degree in<br />
a related area. Students working toward a certificate in gerontology should<br />
consult with an advisor or counselor before planning the total program.<br />

Students may enroll in the certificate program full- or part-time.<br />

Learning Outcomes<br />
Upon successful completion of all Gerontology certificate program requirements,<br />
graduates will<br />
1. Comprehend the physiological, psychological <strong>and</strong> socio-economic<br />
factors relating to the aging process.<br />
2. Demonstrate the ability to comprehend the needs of an elderly person<br />
<strong>and</strong> identify sources of assistance to meet those needs.<br />
3. Demonstrate the ability to identify the need for advocacy for the elderly<br />
<strong>and</strong> sources of assistance.<br />
4. Identify factors necessary for successful aging.<br />
5. Demonstrate interpersonal <strong>and</strong> communication skills necessary to<br />
work in a healthcare or community-based setting serving an elderly<br />
population.<br />
