Program Design<br />

The Administrative Assistant, Office Option, Business Office Technology associate<br />

degree provides students with the skills necessary to excel in the office<br />

environment. Students become proficient in keyboarding, word processing,<br />

office communications skills, integrated office systems, <strong>and</strong> office procedures.<br />

Students are encouraged to develop individual areas of interest through elective<br />

courses <strong>and</strong> through part-time <strong>and</strong> summer employment.<br />

Administrative assistants use technology to originate, access, manage <strong>and</strong><br />

manipulate information. In addition they function independently in initiating<br />

office communications, accessing <strong>and</strong> tracking records <strong>and</strong> information, <strong>and</strong><br />

problem solving the various details of the day-to-day office operations. As<br />

members of management teams, they are able to assume responsibility <strong>and</strong><br />

work independently to exercise initiative <strong>and</strong> judgment <strong>and</strong> to adapt to new<br />

concepts <strong>and</strong> products.<br />

Learning Outcomes<br />

Upon successful completion of all Administrative Assistant, Office—BOT degree<br />

program requirements, graduates will<br />

1. Read, underst<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> prepare st<strong>and</strong>ard types of business communications.<br />

2. Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal, human relations skills.<br />

3. Use appropriate business office procedures.<br />

4. Underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> perform office accounting tasks.<br />

5. Possess appropriate skills in the following software: operating system,<br />

word processing, electronic spreadsheet, database management, integrating<br />

office applications, <strong>and</strong> presentation graphics.<br />

6. Demonstrate speed <strong>and</strong> accuracy in keyboarding skills.<br />

In addition, the graduate will complete the comprehensive learning outcomes<br />

identified with the General Education Component.<br />

Note: Students may elect to substitute BOT* 296 Cooperative Education/Work<br />

Experience for any equivalent BOT credit course with prior departmental approval.<br />

‡ May not be required based on proficiency.<br />
