Continuing Education<br />

The <strong>College</strong>’s Continuing Education Division provides programs relevant to<br />

changing community needs <strong>and</strong> promotes the <strong>College</strong> as a focus of lifelong<br />

learning. Each year more than 8,000 area residents become involved in credit<br />

<strong>and</strong> credit-free courses, seminars <strong>and</strong> workshops, as well as the many cultural<br />

activities <strong>and</strong> special educational services offered through this division. The<br />

Continuing Education Division Offices are located in the Learning Resource<br />

Center.<br />

Business <strong>and</strong> Industry Services (860-512-2813)<br />

As part of a collaborative effort of the state’s 12 community colleges, the<br />

division provides businesses with training <strong>and</strong> educational services. It works<br />

closely with business <strong>and</strong> industry, as well as agencies <strong>and</strong> school districts, to<br />

provide both credit <strong>and</strong> credit-free, on-site instructional programs for employers.<br />

The <strong>College</strong>’s Director of Business <strong>and</strong> Industry Services serves as a<br />

liaison to the business community. Popular training areas include manufacturing<br />

<strong>and</strong> technology, computer skills <strong>and</strong> applications, presentation skills, basic<br />

skills, English as a second language, management <strong>and</strong> supervisory skills <strong>and</strong><br />

lean business enterprises.<br />

Credit Courses (860-512-2800)<br />

Special Sessions: The Continuing Education Division administers Summer<br />

Session <strong>and</strong> Winter Intersession. The Summer Session includes three-week,<br />

six-week <strong>and</strong> eight-week day/evening courses that are offered from mid-May<br />

through July. Winter Intersession courses meet for a three-week period immediately<br />

after Christmas.<br />

Weekend <strong>College</strong>: The Weekend <strong>College</strong> offers a schedule of credit<br />

classes on Friday evenings, <strong>and</strong>/or Saturday mornings, <strong>and</strong>/or afternoons.<br />

New classes begin every six weeks, for a total of seven sessions per year.<br />

Courses offered through the Weekend <strong>College</strong> are open to all students who<br />

meet prerequisite requirements.<br />

Credit-Free Certificate Programs (860-512-2800)<br />

Credit-free certificate programs have been developed by faculty <strong>and</strong> area<br />

professionals to provide a strong foundation of practical <strong>and</strong> up-to-date information<br />

that can assist students in developing skills for their current jobs or for<br />

new careers. These programs are h<strong>and</strong>s-on with a small student/teacher ratio<br />

<strong>and</strong> are taught by professionals in the field.<br />

Current certificate programs include Precision Machining, Personal Trainer,<br />

Certified Bookkeeper, Real Estate, Bartending, Microsoft Office, Certified<br />

Nurse-Aide, Emergency Medical Technician, Oracle Database Administrator,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Pharmacy Technician, for those seeking to develop marketable job skills<br />

in those fields.<br />

Credit-Free Courses (860-512-2800)<br />

In addition to credit courses, the Continuing Education Division administers<br />

an extensive credit-free program. Each semester more than 300 credit-free<br />

courses are offered for career <strong>and</strong> personal development, cultural enrichment,<br />

<strong>and</strong> contemporary living. Most courses meet one or two evenings per week. A<br />

transcript can be issued upon written request <strong>and</strong> payment of a $3 fee.<br />

Excursions in Learning (860-512-2800)<br />

Excursions in Learning is an enrichment program for children ages 4-14.<br />

Creative, high achieving students can explore the sciences, math, history,<br />

the arts, language arts, foreign languages <strong>and</strong> computers through h<strong>and</strong>s-on,<br />

experiential learning. Special Saturday programs are offered in the spring<br />

semester. A two-week summer program is offered in early August.<br />

Grant <strong>and</strong> Training Funds<br />

The Director of Business <strong>and</strong> Industry Services works with area companies to<br />

seek funding for custom training. In addition, through the Office of Institutional<br />

Development, grant funds are sought to support special projects, exp<strong>and</strong><br />

services to specific groups in the communities, <strong>and</strong> to allow the development<br />

of new curricula to meet changing technologies.<br />

Off-Campus Sites (860-512-2800)<br />

Off-campus courses are currently offered at South Windsor High School <strong>and</strong><br />

the East Hartford <strong>Community</strong> Cultural Center. The course offerings are designed<br />

to meet the specific needs of the employers <strong>and</strong> residents of the area.<br />

The Division continually seeks to establish new off-campus sites to respond<br />

to business <strong>and</strong> community needs.<br />

Older Adult Association (860-512-2800)<br />

The MCC Older Adult Association (MCCOAA) is composed of adults 50 years<br />

of age or older who share common interests in educational <strong>and</strong> cultural opportunities.<br />

Short courses designed specifically for this age group are offered<br />

through the Continuing Education Division, <strong>and</strong> special social <strong>and</strong> cultural<br />

events are scheduled throughout the school year. While some Association<br />

members are students of the <strong>College</strong>, it is not a requirement for membership.<br />

Publications (860-512-2800)<br />

Brochures <strong>and</strong> catalogs are published periodically by the Continuing Education<br />

Division to provide schedules of educational offerings <strong>and</strong> registration<br />

information. These are available at the Continuing Education Center, in the<br />

Learning Resource Center, room LRC B-147, <strong>and</strong> on the MCC web site.<br />

Registration (860-512-3220)<br />

Registration for courses offered through the Continuing Education Division<br />

may be done online, in person, by fax or by mail. Registration by telephone is<br />

also available for credit-free courses only on a limited basis, 860-512-3332.<br />

Credit-free courses are open to everyone, regardless of educational background,<br />

on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Courses may be taken individually<br />

or as part of a planned program of study.<br />
