RLS* 121: Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation Services<br />

(formerly THRC 115: Introduction to Principles of Therapeutic Recreation)<br />

This course provides a background of study for the field of therapeutic recreation.<br />

It encompasses the history <strong>and</strong> development of the profession with<br />

an emphasis on underst<strong>and</strong>ing the persons who are served, their disabilities,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the environments in which they live. An experiential approach offers underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

<strong>and</strong> empathy. Class: 3 hours per week. Prerequisite: eligibility for<br />

ENG* 101. (Fa) 3 credits<br />

RLS* 122: Processes <strong>and</strong> Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation<br />

(formerly THRC 116)<br />

This course is designed to provide an overview of the process <strong>and</strong> techniques<br />

used in treatment oriented programs. The course explores leadership skills of<br />

the helping professional through an in-depth look at facilitation techniques used<br />

in therapeutic recreation, including, but not limited to: creative arts, physical/<br />

body movement, mental stimulation, <strong>and</strong> social interaction in relation to the<br />

needs of special population groups. Emphasis is placed on meeting clients’<br />

needs through proper activity selection, including activity analysis <strong>and</strong> program<br />

adaptation/modification. Prerequisite: eligibility for ENG* 101. (Sp) 3 credits<br />

RLS* 221: Therapeutic Recreation Programming<br />

(formerly THRC 215: Therapeutic Recreation Programs: Planning <strong>and</strong><br />

Implementation)<br />

This course involves the student in the study of the therapeutic recreation<br />

process with emphasis on program planning. The needs of the client will be<br />

met through a well planned process that includes assessing functional abilities<br />

<strong>and</strong> needs, planning program goals <strong>and</strong> objectives, implementing the program,<br />

<strong>and</strong> evaluating both the program <strong>and</strong> the client. Prerequisites: RLS* 121 <strong>and</strong><br />

eligibility for ENG* 101. (Sp) 3 credits<br />

RLS* 223: Leisure <strong>and</strong> Aging<br />

(formerly THRC 230)<br />

This course serves as an overview to the delivery of therapeutic recreation<br />

services to older adults. The course will assist the student in developing an<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the elderly <strong>and</strong> how activity intervention may be used to reach<br />

treatment <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation goals. The course will focus on issues such as the<br />

physiological, psychological, <strong>and</strong> socio-economic factors of the aging process,<br />

leisure resources, community <strong>and</strong> institutional services, <strong>and</strong> recreation in assisted<br />

living facilities <strong>and</strong> in long term care settings. (Fa) 3 credits<br />

RLS* 295: Professional Practicum in Therapeutic Recreation<br />

(formerly THRC 280)<br />

This course provides the student with practical experience in a therapeutic<br />

recreation setting. The student is required to work a minimum of 200 hours<br />

in a community based or medical setting that provides therapeutic recreation<br />

services. During this period, the student will apply the knowledge, methods, <strong>and</strong><br />

leadership techniques which have been learned in academic courses. Students<br />

will also participate in 15 hours of classroom discussion during the semester.<br />

Prerequisite: completion of all THRC course work. (Fa,Sp) 4 credits<br />

These courses are open only to students in the Respiratory Care program.<br />

RSP* 121: Cardiopulmonary Anatomy & Physiology<br />

(formerly RC 221: Respiratory Care I)<br />

The student is given an in-depth study of the anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology of the<br />

cardiopulmonary system. Topics will include but are not limited to: structure,<br />

function, <strong>and</strong> assessment of the cardiopulmonary system. To be taken concurrently<br />

with RSP* 141. (Fa) 3 credits<br />

RSP* 131: Applied Pharmacology<br />

(formerly RC 211)<br />

This course includes the study of the composition, indication <strong>and</strong> effects of<br />

medication administered to patients treated in the field of respiratory care.<br />

Emphasis is placed on drugs prescribed for the cardiopulmonary system <strong>and</strong><br />

those delivered by aerosol. To be taken concurrently with RSP* 160 <strong>and</strong> RSP*<br />

180. (Sp) 3 credits<br />

RSP* 141: Principles of Respiratory Care<br />

(formerly RC 201: Clinical Practice <strong>and</strong> RC 241: Ventilation Therapy I)<br />

This course introduces the student to basic principles of clinical respiratory<br />

care. Topics include but are not limited to: medical gas therapy, humidification,<br />

aerosol therapy, physical assessment techniques, OSHA <strong>and</strong> infection control<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards, oxygen therapy, ethics, professionalism <strong>and</strong> medical documentation.<br />

This course has an integrated laboratory. To be taken concurrently with<br />

RSP* 121. (Fa) 4 credits<br />

RSP* 160: Diagnostic & Therapy Principles<br />

(formerly RC 222: Respiratory Care II)<br />

The theory <strong>and</strong> administration of respiratory care procedures, airway management,<br />

monitoring devices, <strong>and</strong> clinical assessment of the respiratory patient<br />

will be taught. Prerequisite: RSP* 121. To be taken concurrently with RSP*<br />

131 <strong>and</strong> RSP* 180. (Sp) 3 credits<br />

RSP* 180: Clinical Practicum<br />

(formerly RC 202: Clinical Practice)<br />

Supervised clinical application of principles learned in the classroom. Students<br />

will be scheduled for various clinical rotations at health care facilities.<br />

Prerequisite: RSP* 121 <strong>and</strong> RSP* 141. To be taken concurrently with RSP*<br />

131 <strong>and</strong> RSP* 160. (Sp) 1 credit<br />

RSP* 181: Clinical Practicum II<br />

(formerly RC 203: Clinical Practice)<br />

Supervised clinical application of principles learned in the classroom. Students<br />

will be scheduled for various clinical rotations at health care facilities. Prerequisite<br />

RSP* 131, RSP* 160, RSP* 180 <strong>and</strong> BIO* 212. (Su) 1 credit<br />

RSP* 251: Respiratory Pathophysiology<br />

(formerly RC 282: Clinical Application I)<br />

The study of cardiopulmonary abnormities <strong>and</strong> diseases of the adult patient.<br />

Major emphasis will be placed on the diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment of patients using<br />

case study analysis. To be taken concurrently with RSP* 251, RSP* 274 <strong>and</strong><br />

RSP* 281. (Fa) 3 credits<br />

RSP* 252: Respiratory Pathophysiology II<br />

(formerly RC 283: Clinical Application II)<br />

The study of cardiopulmonary abnormities <strong>and</strong> diseases of the adult, pediatric<br />

<strong>and</strong> newborn patient. Major emphasis will be placed on the diagnosis, treatment,<br />

<strong>and</strong> management of patients using case study analysis. To be taken<br />

concurrently with RSP* 261 <strong>and</strong> RSP* 282. (Sp) 2 credits<br />

RSP* 260: Advanced Principles of Ventilator Therapy<br />

(formerly RC 242: Ventilation Therapy II)<br />

A study of mechanical ventilators used in respiratory care with an in-depth<br />

explanation of function <strong>and</strong> application. Indications, hazards <strong>and</strong> complications<br />

of mechanical ventilation will be emphasized. Prerequisite: RSP* 160<br />

(Su) 3 credits<br />

RSP* 261: Advanced Respiratory Care II<br />

(formerly RC 261)<br />

A study of the respiratory care modalities used in the care of neonates <strong>and</strong><br />

pulmonary rehabilitation patients. Each population will be discussed in separate<br />

units. To be taken concurrently with RSP* 252 <strong>and</strong> RSP* 282. (Sp) 3 credits<br />
