capture specific aspects <strong>of</strong> the empirical data, none <strong>of</strong> them can easily account for either<br />

the range or the variation <strong>of</strong> the particular impaired l<strong>in</strong>guistic <strong>and</strong> non-l<strong>in</strong>guistic functions<br />

found across SLI, <strong>and</strong> even with<strong>in</strong> SLI subgroups.” (Ullman & Pierpont, 2005, p.<br />

400). In a more strict way, Tombl<strong>in</strong> et al. (2003) summarized this <strong>in</strong> the statement:<br />

“Aetiology <strong>of</strong> SLI is unknown.” (p. 235).<br />

In their acquisition <strong>of</strong> grammar, children with SLI might miss to notice the regularities<br />

<strong>in</strong> the language <strong>in</strong>put. Many prerequisites <strong>of</strong> language acquisition may be important for<br />

music perception as well. For example, capacity limitations <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>formation process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

– hypothesized for children with SLI – may hamper them to assess regularities <strong>in</strong><br />

language <strong>and</strong> music. Dur<strong>in</strong>g language acquisition, these children may rely for a longer<br />

period on lexically specific item-based <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> may require a larger verb vocabulary<br />

to extract pattern or schemata. Further, it might be harder for these children to<br />

build a critical mass <strong>of</strong> verb tokens <strong>and</strong> construction types which is crucial for this process.
