Language Perception 63<br />

lary size were l<strong>in</strong>ked by a cont<strong>in</strong>uous <strong>and</strong> accelerat<strong>in</strong>g function (Bates & Goodman,<br />

1997). The size <strong>of</strong> verb vocabulary was concurrently related to the number <strong>of</strong> reported<br />

over-regularizations, an <strong>in</strong>dicator for the acquisition <strong>of</strong> grammatical morphology<br />

(Marchman & Bates, 1994).<br />

Language is a form <strong>of</strong> communication, a tool that we use to accomplish certa<strong>in</strong> social<br />

ends. Children are immersed <strong>in</strong> communicative <strong>in</strong>teraction with others from <strong>in</strong>fancy, but<br />

there are many skills that take years to develop. For example, coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g reference<br />

across speaker <strong>and</strong> listener roles <strong>in</strong>volves manipulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g given <strong>and</strong><br />

new <strong>in</strong>formation, deictic <strong>and</strong> anaphoric pronouns, temporal <strong>in</strong>formation, <strong>and</strong> so on.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g development, children gradually become able to consciously reflect on language,<br />

to correct their own <strong>and</strong> others’ utterances, <strong>and</strong> to notice features <strong>of</strong> language at<br />

all levels. Karmil<strong>of</strong>f-Smith (1992) proposes a developmental progression with an early<br />

period <strong>of</strong> language learn<strong>in</strong>g followed by a period <strong>of</strong> skill automatization: Children have<br />

to learn the forms <strong>of</strong> the language <strong>and</strong> to use them relatively effortlessly. Once language<br />

becomes relatively fluent <strong>and</strong> automatic, it can become an object <strong>of</strong> reflection.<br />

5.2 Language process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

In the current section three ma<strong>in</strong> issues will be discussed. Firstly, a brief overview <strong>of</strong><br />

(ma<strong>in</strong>ly l<strong>in</strong>guistic) accounts to syntactic process<strong>in</strong>g will be given. The second part <strong>in</strong>troduces<br />

a model to describe particular stages <strong>of</strong> syntactic process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> the bra<strong>in</strong><br />

correlates <strong>of</strong> these steps. In the third part the function <strong>of</strong> two bra<strong>in</strong> regions that are <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> language process<strong>in</strong>g, specifically <strong>in</strong> the process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>guistic syntax, will<br />

be discussed.<br />

<strong>Process<strong>in</strong>g</strong> syntactic structures<br />

Syntactic <strong>in</strong>formation is, among other types <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation, used, to determ<strong>in</strong>e the<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a sentence. Syntactic processes <strong>in</strong>clude: [1] Structure build<strong>in</strong>g (comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

words <strong>in</strong>to larger units on the basis <strong>of</strong> word category <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>and</strong> grammar rules);<br />

[2] check<strong>in</strong>g agreement (i.e. for <strong>in</strong>flectional features that establish a relationship, e.g.,<br />

between verb <strong>and</strong> noun); [3] mapp<strong>in</strong>g thematic roles (such as agent <strong>and</strong> patient) onto<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> positions <strong>in</strong> the sentence; <strong>and</strong> [4] complexity (e.g., deal<strong>in</strong>g with non-canonical<br />

word order).
