Development of the Neural Correlates of Music-Syntactic Processing 157
N5: The N5 was proposed to reflect processes of harmonic integration (see, e.g.,
Koelsch et al., 2000). It could not be observed in the 2½-year old children. For the older
children, the development of its amplitude was essentially the same as for the ERAN
amplitude. In the NM children it was largest in 5-year old children (M = -1.47 μV;
SEM = 0.52 μV), decreased for 9-year old children (M = -1.15 μV; SEM = 0.89 μV),
and was smallest in 11-year old children (M = -0.98 μV; SEM = 0.43 μV). In MT children,
the amplitude size of the N5 was similar to the size in NM children: it was slightly
higher in 9-year-olds (M = -1.21 μV; SEM = 0.53 μV) and decreased in 11-year-olds
(M = -0.87 μV; SEM = 0.34 μV).
An ANOVA with the same factors as above (but without the group of 2½-year old children,
for which no N5 was observed) revealed a main effect of syntactic regularity
(F(1,88) = 14.32; p < 0.001), and an interaction of syntactic regularity × anterior-posterior
distribution (F(1,88) = 19.73; p
