solvent plants (in cottonseed). There is interest in hard screw pressing oilseeds to<br />

produce organically grown or certifiable non-generating modified vegetable oil or to<br />

comply with local laws that prevent construction of new solvent plants such as in<br />

California. A small amount of soybean is hard-screw-pressed where the meal has<br />

particularly high value (e.g., high rumen bypass meal for dairy cattle feed). Screw<br />

pressing of copra, peanuts, sesame, <strong>and</strong> cocoa butter also remains popular in developing<br />

countries where investment capital is limited.<br />

5. Prepress Solvent Extraction<br />

In prepress solvent extraction (Fig. 2), part of the oil that is easily removed, is pressed<br />

out as described above. The press is choked such that less pressure is developed.<br />

Consequently, less oil is extracted <strong>and</strong> throughput is increased. Usually, the oil con-<br />
