(Fig. 16). The most common convention to differentiate these stereoisomers<br />

is the sn convention of Hirshmann (see Ref. 31). In the numbering that describes<br />

the hydroxyl groups on the glycerol molecule in Fisher projection, sn1, sn2, <strong>and</strong> sn3<br />

designations are used for the top (C1), middle (C2), <strong>and</strong> bottom (C3) OH groups<br />

(Fig. 17). The sn term indicates stereospecific numbering [1].<br />
