NYANKOLE The Nyankole belong to the western Interlacustrine Bantu of<br />

Uganda that include also the Nyoro and Toro tribes. They all developed similar<br />

political cultures of kingship and centralized government and also share a common<br />

tradition about a group of alien gods who brought statecraft and cattle to<br />

the area. Historians question the tradition but agree that the states in this region<br />

were established about five centuries ago by pastoral people who founded their<br />

dynasties and dominated the agricultural inhabitants.<br />

Ankole, the homeland of the Nyankole, was one of several ancient kingdoms<br />

that were abolished in 1967 and today forms a district in southwest Uganda. It<br />

borders the Kangera River on the south, Lake Edward and Lake George on the<br />

west, the former kingdom of Toro on the north and the western plateau of<br />

Buganda on the east. The area has considerable topographical variety, the eastern<br />

part consisting of green hills about 4,000 feet in elevation and several small<br />

lakes, among them Mburu and Nakivaly. To the west the elevation rises to 7,000<br />

feet and then abruptly goes down to the western rift and the shores of lakes
