MAGUINDANAO The Maguindanao are the largest Muslim ethnic group in<br />

the Philippines. They number approximately 885,000, or about 1.7 percent of<br />

the population. Nearly all live in the province of Cotabato on the large southern<br />

island of Mindanao.<br />

Just north of the Maguindanao are two other major Muslim groups—the Maranao<br />

of the region around Lake Lanao and the Iranon, who live along the coast<br />

of Illana Bay (see Maranao). The three groups are closely related culturally and
