The <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Valley was formed by <strong>Lake</strong> Bonneville, a prehistoric pluvial lake exist<strong>in</strong>g about 14,500 years ago that once covered much of <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern Great Bas<strong>in</strong> region. The Great <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> and Utah <strong>Lake</strong> (found far<strong>the</strong>r south <strong>in</strong> Utah County) are remnants of this ancient body of water,<br />

as are <strong>the</strong> benches or shelf-like plateaus common along <strong>the</strong> Wasatch Range foothills.<br />
