Though <strong>the</strong> Wasatch Range, located on <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong><br />

<strong>City</strong>’s eastern edge, is most typically associated with<br />

<strong>the</strong> city’s <strong>in</strong>credible mounta<strong>in</strong> access, <strong>the</strong> Oquirrh<br />

Mounta<strong>in</strong>s frame <strong>the</strong> city more distantly to <strong>the</strong><br />

west. Wildlife abounds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oquirrhs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

healthy populations of deer, mounta<strong>in</strong> lions,<br />

butterflies and bald eagles. Popular hik<strong>in</strong>g trails<br />

are found <strong>in</strong> Yellow Fork and Butterfield Canyons.<br />

This mounta<strong>in</strong> range is best known, however,<br />

for <strong>the</strong> rich m<strong>in</strong>eral deposits discovered here and<br />

consequent construction of what is now <strong>the</strong> world’s<br />

largest open pit m<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> B<strong>in</strong>gham Canyon M<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
