Temple Square consists of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Temple, <strong>the</strong> Tabernacle (home of <strong>the</strong><br />

Mormon Tabernacle Choir), <strong>the</strong> Assembly Hall and two visitors’ centers.<br />

Millions of people from around<br />

<strong>the</strong> world visit <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong> each<br />

year. Some come for <strong>the</strong> ski<strong>in</strong>g, o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

for <strong>the</strong> spectacular national parks.<br />

Many come to visit <strong>the</strong> world headquarters<br />

of The Church of Jesus<br />

Christ of Latter-day Sa<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

Situated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart of downtown,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Church’s thirty-five acre<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> campus draws visitors from all<br />

over <strong>the</strong> world because of its<br />

renowned research libraries, cultural<br />

activities and historic build<strong>in</strong>gs—<br />

most notably <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Temple<br />

at <strong>the</strong> center of Temple Square.<br />

Square come from fifty-one nations and speak more than<br />

thirty languages to accommodate foreign guests.<br />

Some visitors also come to see<br />

<strong>the</strong> Church’s Humanitarian Center<br />

and to learn how it partners locally<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ternationally with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

faiths and nonprofit organizations<br />

to m<strong>in</strong>ister to those <strong>in</strong> need. For<br />

example, <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong> is a refugee<br />

relocation center, and <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

offers refugees, regardless of<br />

religious affiliation, an opportunity<br />

to work <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

Humanitarian Center <strong>in</strong> <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong><br />

<strong>City</strong>, provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m with food,<br />

cloth<strong>in</strong>g, job tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and English,<br />

computer, and cultural adaptation<br />

classes. They also receive medical,<br />

educational, and emotional support<br />

through <strong>the</strong> Church and its <strong>in</strong>terfaith partners. The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

programs normally last up to eighteen months, after which<br />

participants are helped to f<strong>in</strong>d long-term employment.<br />

The Church’s Humanitarian Center was established <strong>in</strong> 1991<br />

to provide emergency supplies to those who were suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wake of natural and man-made disasters. Humanitarian<br />

leaders work toge<strong>the</strong>r globally with Catholic Relief Services,<br />

<strong>the</strong> American Red Cross, <strong>the</strong> Red Crescent, among o<strong>the</strong>rs to<br />

provide services and supplies <strong>in</strong> disaster zones.<br />

Typically <strong>the</strong> Humanitarian Center will ship approximately<br />

8 million pounds of shoes and cloth<strong>in</strong>g, 500,000 hygiene<br />

and school kits, and 20,000 quilts to relieve suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

more than 50 countries every year. The Church of Jesus<br />

Christ of Latter-day Sa<strong>in</strong>ts has provided over $1 billion <strong>in</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial and material assistance to <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> more<br />

than 170 countries s<strong>in</strong>ce 1985, when <strong>the</strong> Church began<br />

track<strong>in</strong>g such <strong>in</strong>formation. Relief supplies are provided<br />

locally and <strong>in</strong>ternationally to relieve suffer<strong>in</strong>g without regard<br />

for ethnicity, religion, or political persuasion.<br />
