<strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s diversity, healthy economy and<br />

relative low cost of liv<strong>in</strong>g have helped shape a variety<br />

of micro-communities surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong><br />

proper, each with its own unique look and personality.<br />

The Avenues/Capitol Hill area is characterized by a<br />

mix of colorful Victorian and mid-century modern<br />

homes, eclectic cafes, m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g-era mansions and <strong>the</strong><br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>dral of <strong>the</strong> Madele<strong>in</strong>e, completed <strong>in</strong> 1909 as<br />

<strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r church for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong> Catholic<br />

Diocese. To <strong>the</strong> west, Rose Park, Poplar Grove and<br />

Glendale are <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s diverse<br />

immigrant communities, reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wellcared<br />

for International Peace Gardens and Jordan<br />

River Parkway walk<strong>in</strong>g and cycl<strong>in</strong>g path. Students,<br />

professors and high-tech professionals m<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

neighborhoods surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> University of Utah,<br />

an area home to some of <strong>the</strong> city’s most popular<br />

In 1888 <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong> municipal government donated twenty acres of<br />

land for <strong>the</strong> construction of <strong>the</strong> State Capitol, a parcel <strong>the</strong>n known as<br />

Arsenal Hill for its previous function as a private munitions storage area.<br />
