CEMENTATION USA, INC.<br />

An underground m<strong>in</strong>e contract<strong>in</strong>g and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g company,<br />

Cementation USA, Inc., provides m<strong>in</strong>e development<br />

and production services for clients throughout <strong>the</strong> United<br />

States and Mexico. Its parent company is Cementation<br />

Canada, Inc., and it is part of <strong>the</strong> global Murray & Roberts<br />

companies. Incorporated <strong>in</strong> Nevada <strong>in</strong> 2005, it has a corporate<br />

office <strong>in</strong> Sandy, Utah.<br />

Cementation was orig<strong>in</strong>ally founded <strong>in</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> 1920s, grow<strong>in</strong>g from a small construction company to<br />

a global leader <strong>in</strong> underground m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g construction and<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g solutions. After establish<strong>in</strong>g a strong presence<br />

<strong>in</strong> South Africa, a large m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g market was purchased <strong>in</strong><br />

2003 by Murray & Roberts, a global construction company<br />

based <strong>in</strong> Johannesburg. Cementation Canada, established <strong>in</strong><br />

1998, grew swiftly, with <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g demand for services <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> U.S., lead<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> U.S. entity. Key <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

Roy Slack, president of Cementation Canada, Inc.; Mike<br />

Nadon, promoted from Vice President of Operations <strong>in</strong><br />

Canada to President of Cementation USA; and Steve<br />

Lea<strong>the</strong>rwood, director of f<strong>in</strong>ance.<br />

In 2006, Rio T<strong>in</strong>to, one of <strong>the</strong> world’s largest<br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g companies, awarded Cementation a huge<br />

project <strong>in</strong> Arizona <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g a vertical shaft—<br />

twenty-eight foot <strong>in</strong> diameter with ultimate<br />

depth of 6,943 feet. The company’s performance<br />

and safety record established its reputation, and<br />

it qu<strong>in</strong>tupled revenues over <strong>the</strong> next few years.<br />

The 2008 tim<strong>in</strong>g of Cementation’s new office<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g was unfortunate, as it also marked <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry’s dramatic downturn, driven by<br />

<strong>the</strong> global economic crisis.<br />

“We managed to hunker down and reduce<br />

costs to rema<strong>in</strong> above water,” Nadon says.<br />

“We negotiated ano<strong>the</strong>r large project based on<br />

our strategy and agreement to reduce our fees<br />

if <strong>the</strong> project would proceed immediately. This extra revenue<br />

launched us <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> consistent growth that followed, and<br />

to recruit<strong>in</strong>g key <strong>in</strong>dividuals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Bill Tilley, Just<strong>in</strong><br />

Oleson, Mike Nadon, Mike Condie, Willie F<strong>in</strong>ch, David<br />

Sabour<strong>in</strong>, Brian Still, and Stephen Liu.”<br />

Most recently, Nadon has retired and taken on an<br />

executive advisory role, and Oleson has been appo<strong>in</strong>ted as<br />

his successor.<br />

The company’s growth is evident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number of<br />

employees—98 <strong>in</strong> 2008 and 294 <strong>in</strong> 2013, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 63<br />

corporate office employees, 35 at Utah projects, and 200 <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r states. Its revenue has <strong>in</strong>creased from $32 million <strong>in</strong><br />

2008 to over $125 million <strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />

Cementation has received many awards, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Fast 50, an award given to <strong>the</strong> fastest-grow<strong>in</strong>g companies<br />

<strong>in</strong> Utah. It has also received many Best Employer awards.<br />

Its employees are “doers,” who actively participate <strong>in</strong> company<br />

and community events. Community and charitable<br />

activities <strong>in</strong>clude Sandy Kids Club—a club for boys and<br />

girls; and Wish Foundation.<br />
