The company’s founders were surprised when <strong>the</strong><br />

SBA loan officer review<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir application commented,<br />

“Your bus<strong>in</strong>ess plan will fail <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>ety days.” Even so, <strong>the</strong><br />

founders rema<strong>in</strong>ed committed to <strong>the</strong> plan, conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

loan officer to approve <strong>the</strong> loan. The wisdom of that decision<br />

is evident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company’s success, with statistics which<br />

today <strong>in</strong>clude over fifty employees and over $15 million<br />

annually <strong>in</strong> sales revenues.<br />

When it began, <strong>the</strong> company’s ma<strong>in</strong> product l<strong>in</strong>e was<br />

Steelcraft Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g Company, a leader <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hollow<br />

metal door and frame <strong>in</strong>dustry, but Beacon struggled with<br />

sub-tier hardware l<strong>in</strong>es at that time, as all of <strong>the</strong> major l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

were represented by large, compet<strong>in</strong>g door and hardware<br />

suppliers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> market. The alum<strong>in</strong>um w<strong>in</strong>dow<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry, which was extremely competitive, was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />

stages of convert<strong>in</strong>g from s<strong>in</strong>gle pane to double pane<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows, render<strong>in</strong>g most of Beacon’s manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

equipment obsolete. As a result, <strong>the</strong> company exited <strong>the</strong><br />

alum<strong>in</strong>um w<strong>in</strong>dow bus<strong>in</strong>ess just a few years after start-up<br />

with <strong>the</strong> commitment to focus its efforts and <strong>in</strong>vestment on<br />

architectural doors, frames and hardware.<br />

When John was called to serve a mission for <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sa<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a, Hank<br />

became <strong>the</strong> new general manager. Under his direction, <strong>the</strong><br />

company purchased property and developed <strong>the</strong> facility at<br />

its current location, 2770 South West Temple, <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong>.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g Hank’s tenure, <strong>the</strong> company’s revenues doubled prior<br />

to his retir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1992. Ken Riches, <strong>the</strong> next generation,<br />

became <strong>the</strong> company’s president, a post he still holds. O<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

who have played key roles <strong>in</strong> our company <strong>in</strong>clude Jim and<br />

Larry Butler; Carlos Esparza, Jay Ombach and many o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

talented and exceptional people.<br />

“Over <strong>the</strong> years, our company has transitioned from<br />

manual processes to computerization,” says Ken, president.<br />

“Our first computer was an IBM system that required<br />

n<strong>in</strong>e-<strong>in</strong>ch floppy disks.” Orders<br />

to manufacturers were sent,<br />

acknowledged, and returned by<br />

mail before manufactur<strong>in</strong>g could<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>. All bus<strong>in</strong>ess was transacted<br />

this way and was very time consum<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Today, <strong>the</strong> entire system<br />

has changed dramatically. One<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g that has rema<strong>in</strong>ed consistent<br />

is <strong>the</strong> quality of people who have<br />

been employed here.<br />

Innovations that have contributed<br />

to Beacon Metals’ success<br />

have <strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

• The purchase of a sheer and press provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

custom frame manufactur<strong>in</strong>g capability;<br />

• Development of <strong>in</strong>novative solutions such<br />

as: “Stagecraft” under-stage door for <strong>the</strong><br />

churches and <strong>the</strong>atres;<br />

• Pre-<strong>in</strong>stallment of hardware on doors “<strong>in</strong><br />

house,” to facilitate greater efficiency than<br />

when <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g at a jobsite;<br />

• Investment <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry software, expand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> ability to manage greater sales revenues.<br />

The company has added a national sales<br />

department, a security center team focused on<br />

access control, a walk-<strong>in</strong> counter department,<br />

a contract bidd<strong>in</strong>g department and an <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

team with <strong>the</strong> ability to provide extraord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

value to its customers.<br />
