Part 2 Sum of its Parts Utah has had the good fortune of steady growth and a strong economy from virtually the moment the last golden spike was driven into the Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Point in 1869. But over the last decade or so, Salt Lake City in particular has evolved from a slightly sedate, homogenous professional center deserted after 6 p.m. to a thriving cosmopolitan vortex where people live, recreate and enjoy events, arts and culture. Some credit the 2002 Olympic Winter Games for Salt Lake City’s Cinderella story. A more likely catalyst is the state and city’s ongoing dedication to infrastructure investment. P A R T T WO 6 7
