Mov<strong>in</strong>g toward <strong>the</strong> future with a nod to <strong>the</strong> past<br />

Through a partnership between <strong>the</strong> Federal Department of Transportation, <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong> and South<br />

<strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> municipalities and <strong>the</strong> Utah Transit Authority, <strong>the</strong> $37 million Sugar House Streetcar—<br />

dubbed <strong>the</strong> “S L<strong>in</strong>e”—launched service <strong>in</strong> December 2013 along a two-mile route between <strong>the</strong> TRAX<br />

Central Po<strong>in</strong>te Station at 2100 South and 200 West to 2250 South McClelland Avenue (1050 East) <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Sugar House commercial district. The l<strong>in</strong>e is rem<strong>in</strong>iscent of streetcars that played a key role <strong>in</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s suburban communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early 1900s. The Sugar House Streetcar and<br />

accompany<strong>in</strong>g walk<strong>in</strong>g and bicycle route greenway not only provide convenient public transit between<br />

South <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong>, downtown and Sugar House, but also represent a critical l<strong>in</strong>k for <strong>the</strong> Parleys Trail,<br />

connect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Bonneville Shorel<strong>in</strong>e Trail on <strong>the</strong> east and <strong>the</strong> Jordan River Parkway on <strong>the</strong> west.<br />
