Owned and operated by Taubman Centers, Inc., and<br />

anchored by Nordstrom and Macy’s, <strong>City</strong> Creek Center is <strong>the</strong><br />

project’s retail centerpiece with more than 100 stores and<br />

restaurants and 2,000 employees. Landscaped walkways<br />

set amidst splash<strong>in</strong>g waterfalls, tranquil ponds, a sparkl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

creek and restful plazas blend to create a vibrant, welcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

place to shop, eat and visit.<br />

Spann<strong>in</strong>g nearly 140 feet over Ma<strong>in</strong> Street, a pedestrian<br />

sky bridge connects retail gallerias where shoppers enjoy<br />

climate-controlled comfort under a retractable glass roof.<br />

A first <strong>in</strong> American shopp<strong>in</strong>g centers, <strong>the</strong> sixty-foot roof<br />

requires just m<strong>in</strong>utes to open or close. Its <strong>in</strong>novative design,<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and fabrication earned national recognition<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2013 from <strong>the</strong> American Institute of Steel Construction.<br />

The project takes its name from <strong>City</strong> Creek, <strong>the</strong> snow-fed<br />

stream that susta<strong>in</strong>ed early settlers when <strong>the</strong>y first arrived<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> arid <strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Valley <strong>in</strong> 1847. On Ma<strong>in</strong> Street, <strong>the</strong><br />

restored cast-iron façade of Zion’s Cooperative Mercantile<br />

Institution (ZCMI) rem<strong>in</strong>ds shoppers and visitors of <strong>the</strong><br />

city’s pioneer<strong>in</strong>g heritage. The first elements of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tricate<br />

façade were <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> 1876. Over <strong>the</strong> years, <strong>the</strong> signature<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong> Street face of <strong>the</strong> ZCMI store became a symbol<br />

of <strong>in</strong>dustry, commerce and progress and was listed on<br />

<strong>the</strong> National Register of Historic Places. Its pa<strong>in</strong>stak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

restoration and adaptation as an entrance to Macy’s earned<br />

a 2013 Heritage Award from <strong>the</strong> Utah Heritage Foundation.<br />

On March 22, 2012, Church leaders jo<strong>in</strong>ed retail executives<br />

and city and state government officials at <strong>City</strong> Creek’s<br />

grand open<strong>in</strong>g. They praised <strong>the</strong> project’s “beautifully<br />

landscaped walkways and ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g places, <strong>in</strong>novative yet<br />

timeless architecture, cascad<strong>in</strong>g waterfalls, choreographed<br />

founta<strong>in</strong>s, and meander<strong>in</strong>g creek.”<br />

After nearly ten years of plann<strong>in</strong>g and construction and<br />

seven million hours of labor, <strong>City</strong> Creek is fulfill<strong>in</strong>g President<br />

H<strong>in</strong>ckley’s vision of renewed vitality at <strong>the</strong> head of Ma<strong>in</strong><br />

Street br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased vigor throughout Utah’s capital city.<br />
