But Jackl<strong>in</strong>g took some <strong>in</strong>fluential f<strong>in</strong>anciers to B<strong>in</strong>gham<br />

Canyon <strong>in</strong> June 1903 to conv<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>m that his <strong>the</strong>ory<br />

would work and that profits could be made by m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lowgrade<br />

ores conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g thirty-n<strong>in</strong>e pounds of copper per ton.<br />

Jackl<strong>in</strong>g’s determ<strong>in</strong>ed conviction was good enough for<br />

<strong>the</strong> backers. They <strong>in</strong>vested $500,000 to get him started,<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g birth to <strong>the</strong> Utah Copper Company on June 4, 1903.<br />

That was <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of what would become one of <strong>the</strong><br />

greatest m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g enterprises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

In its first year of operation, <strong>the</strong> company showed a profit<br />

of $142,000. Some previously skeptical <strong>in</strong>vestors now<br />

wanted to come on board, and <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>vested an additional<br />

$5 million <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

Of about forty companies that were m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g underground<br />

for lead, silver, z<strong>in</strong>c and gold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> B<strong>in</strong>gham District, only a<br />

few were <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g copper from <strong>the</strong> surface.<br />

People throughout <strong>the</strong> world—mostly immigrants from<br />

Europe, Asia and Mexico—came to seek work. More than<br />

forty dist<strong>in</strong>ct ethnic groups lived <strong>in</strong> camps and towns<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g district. These groups and <strong>the</strong>ir work<br />

helped drive <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

Today, <strong>the</strong> operation is still thriv<strong>in</strong>g. What cont<strong>in</strong>ues<br />

to drive Kennecott is its commitment to susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />

This commitment with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community is an<br />

important part of how it does bus<strong>in</strong>ess and encompasses<br />

economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and social<br />

well-be<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Support<strong>in</strong>g and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g a susta<strong>in</strong>able economy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Salt</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> Valley is important to Kennecott as a valuable<br />

member of <strong>the</strong> community. Its objective is to understand<br />

and maximize <strong>the</strong> benefits it br<strong>in</strong>gs to <strong>the</strong> economy at local,<br />

regional and national levels by be<strong>in</strong>g a leader <strong>in</strong> production,<br />

exports and revenue.<br />

Throughout <strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> B<strong>in</strong>gham Canyon M<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

no o<strong>the</strong>r s<strong>in</strong>gle private-sector operation has generated more<br />

production, exports, <strong>in</strong>come and employment for as many<br />

years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Bureau of Economic and<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Research at <strong>the</strong> University of Utah.<br />
