Witnesses emphasized that there was no prejudice aga<strong>in</strong>st Urdu <strong>in</strong> Punjab and people there wanted to learn it. <strong>The</strong> Punjab University courses however had been framed <strong>in</strong> such a way as to prevent specially<br />

of B. A. and B.Sc. from offer<strong>in</strong>g Urdu as a subject. This should be remedied. 4.351 Rajasthan : We were, told that facilities for teach<strong>in</strong>g Urdu existed at colleges In Tonk, Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Sikar and Udaipur. <strong>The</strong> number of students desir<strong>in</strong>g to study students<br />

language was substantial particularly <strong>in</strong> Maharani College, Jaipur; L. B. College; the<br />

Government College, Nasirabad and Government College, Swai Madhopur. In the absence of facilities for teach<strong>in</strong>g Urdu as a subject, students felt frustrated. A number of students of Kota College represented to the Director of Education and Chief Jaipur;<br />

of the State for the <strong>in</strong>troduction of Urdu as a subject, but noth<strong>in</strong>g had been done so far. Arrangements for teach<strong>in</strong>g the subject at the post-graduate level existed only <strong>in</strong> the Udaipur University and the Vice-Chancellor of the Rajasthan University had Secretary<br />

that M.A. courses would be started at that University from 1973-74. announced<br />

wanted provision of facilities for research also. 4.352 Uttar Pradesh : Witnesses compla<strong>in</strong>ed that there were very few colleges offer<strong>in</strong>g Urdu as a subject at graduate and post-graduate levels <strong>in</strong> Uttar Pradesh. Seven Witnesses<br />

i.e. Agra, Aligarh, Allahabad, Banaras, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Meerut, had full-fledged departments of Urdu but there was no chair <strong>in</strong> Agra and Meerut Universities. Creation of chairs <strong>in</strong> these two universities was urged. One witness Universities,<br />

the <strong>in</strong>troduction of Urdu as a subject <strong>in</strong> all the, colleges and full-fledged demanded<br />

of Urdu <strong>in</strong> all the, universities of Uttar Pradesh. 4.353 <strong>The</strong> Director of Education <strong>in</strong>formed the <strong>Committee</strong> that facilities for teach<strong>in</strong>g Urdu up to the degree level had been provided <strong>in</strong> '14 colleges and up to the post-graduate department<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Gujral</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> <strong>Report</strong><br />

level <strong>in</strong> six colleges. Grants at the degree level were sanctioned, three years after the <strong>in</strong>troduction of the subject. But <strong>in</strong> the case of Urdu, it was decided by the Government that grants might be given even from the first year <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e districts of Uttar Pradesh which had more than 15 per cent of the population speak<strong>in</strong>g Urdu. So far no college had come forward to take advantage of the offer.<br />
