Numerically, Urdu has a strong case for larger representation provided it succeeds on conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g the Accreditation <strong>Committee</strong> that those apply<strong>in</strong>g for admission <strong>in</strong> its behalf fulfil the conditions laid down under the rules. Without adequate f<strong>in</strong>ancial 6.160<br />

the search for qualified correspondents will be futile. Urdu newspapers should take up Vie question with the professional bodies of journalists like A.I.N.E.C, and I.F.W.J. Through jo<strong>in</strong>t consultation some procedure could, perhaps,be workedout for the back<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

weaker sections of the press to have accreditation. 'Even limited economically<br />

for certa<strong>in</strong> functions could be thought of. At this stage, it is not possible for us to make any recommendation. 6.161 At some of the State centres visited by us, we heard compla<strong>in</strong>ts about most of the accreditation<br />

Governments not accord<strong>in</strong>g accreditation of Urdu newspapers and periodicals. In West Bengal, for <strong>in</strong>stance, our attention was drawn to the complete absence of Urdu correspondents from the accredited list of the West Bengal Government. <strong>The</strong> Director of State<br />

who deposed before us, promised to look <strong>in</strong>to the matter and to have the Publicity,<br />

removed. 6.162 We feel that the Urdu press has started expand<strong>in</strong>g on the right l<strong>in</strong>es and <strong>in</strong> this critical phase deserves greater understand<strong>in</strong>g and encouragement by the State and grievance<br />

Governments alike. <strong>The</strong> general standard of Urdu newspapers and periodicals is bound to improve once they get unh<strong>in</strong>dered access to major sources of public <strong>in</strong>formation and an opportunity to study <strong>in</strong> depth the various developmental processes, Central<br />
