who were anxious to accord Urdu all reasonable facilities. <strong>The</strong> clarification of Government of Andhra Pradesh G. O. No. 1800 by that Government; the publication of official journals <strong>in</strong> Urdu by the Punjab, Maharashtra and Haryana Governments; the M<strong>in</strong>isters,<br />

up of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Centre for Urdu teachers of Himachal Pradesh and the Publication of the State Gazettes <strong>in</strong> Urdu by the Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are some <strong>in</strong>stances of the positive action taken by the State Governments sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and the effectiveness of the <strong>Committee</strong>'s endeavours. Incidentally the State concerned<br />

of Maharashtra has also very recent- ly announced the sett<strong>in</strong>g up of an Urdu Academy. Government<br />

We have pleasure <strong>in</strong> plac<strong>in</strong>g on record out appreciation of the services rendered by the Member-Secretary, the Member Jo<strong>in</strong>t Secretary and other officers of the <strong>Committee</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with them. Shri Kanti Chaudhuri, the first Member Secretary, with 1.28<br />

<strong>in</strong>timate knowledge of educational problems and his wide sympathies, brought to his<br />

a fresh and dynamic outlook on the <strong>Committee</strong>'s work. His succe- ssor, Shri Shabid Alikhan, showed keep <strong>in</strong>sight and awareness of the problems and carried forward the work with great vigour and drive, <strong>in</strong>itiative and understand<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>y were bear<br />

<strong>in</strong> this work by Shri S. Ali Jawad Zaidi, a scholar, poet and communications expert, whose contribution to the compilation of this report has been considerable. <strong>The</strong> thoroughness with which he marshalled the material deserves special mention. It was assisted<br />

his immediate supervision that the whole work was orga<strong>in</strong>sed and executed In a under<br />

and scientific manner. Despite his other multifarious and heavy duties, he worked unceas<strong>in</strong>gly with efficiency and zeal and never allowed the <strong>Committee</strong>'s work to flag or falter. <strong>The</strong> Commit. tee also notes with appreciation the assistance so ably planned<br />

Appendix XXXI for its unremitt<strong>in</strong>g efforts. 6<br />
