ARGENTINA
In the colder
south, you will
find wines with
higher acidity
and lighter
fruit.
Biggest producer of Malbec in the
world.
Over 60% of Argentine wine is grown
in the Mendoza region.
Some vineyards are 3000m above
sea level causing slower ripening
grapes with more freshness and
acidity in the wines.
Wine production in Argentina dates back to the 16th
century when Spanish colonisers brought vines with
them to the region. Today, the vineyards of Argentina
cover 220 000 hectares across different regions each
producing widely different wines and styles to explore.
In the colder South of these wine regions, you will find
wines with higher acidity and lighter fruit. These regions
are known for great Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
While, in the warmer North, you often find full-bodied,
structured Malbec and Chardonnay.
Argentina is the fifth largest wine producer in the
world after Italy, France, Spain and the USA. The main
producing region is the province of Mendoza producing
more than 60% of the Argentinian wine, followed by
the provinces of San Juan and La Rioja, and then Salta,
Tucumán, Catamarca, La Pampa and Rio Negro.
As the 2nd largest wine producing region of Argentina,
San Juan accounts for around 20% of the total wine
production. The region is located in west-central
Argentina and right on the foot of the Andes Mountains,
which supplies the dry region with meltwater.
