AUSTRALIA - PLAN B! WINES
“There is no doubting the well-made commercial Australian wine widely available, and
the more iconic traditional styles in niche segments still sought after. By and large, they
are either Chardonnay, Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, but the really exciting
action currently in the Australian category is centred around alternative varieties and wine
styles with personality and character.
“Varieties such as Riesling (although far from alternative!), Chenin Blanc, Arneis, Tempranillo,
Sangiovese, Gamay, Grenache and blends are being crafted through a new lens, delivering
wines with vitality and energy. Whites with lifted aromatics, bright, textural palates and reds
that are supple, medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant with a savoury core are capturing the
attention of consumers for their moreish drinkability.
“These are our wine styles that we see working well in the UK currently both in the on-trade
and independent off-trade through our partnership with Lanchester Wines.
- Terry Chellappah
Plan B ‘MR’ Modern Red Shiraz Pinot
Noir 2019
Great Southern
67% Shiraz and Pinot Noir at 33% from 20 year
old vines, hand harvested, barrel matured in
French oak barriques for seven months. Pretty,
floral, red cherry and strawberry aromatics with
the raspberry and spice of cool climate Shiraz
adding punch to the palate.
“This wine is a bit out-of-the-box and fun to do, so
it fits Plan B! perfectly!
“We call this Modern Red but I think its a really oldfashioned
wine style. Going back to the 60’s 70’s in
Australia, we used to make medium-bodied light,
bright, aromatic red wines. As the years have gone
by, we’ve started to make bigger, oakier, fuller
wines. But our reds are more restrained, more
elegant, more savoury and medium bodied.
Grape varieties: Shiraz, Pinot Noir
AU291 - 12x75cl
C
This wine has some of the aromatics and silkiness
from Pinot, but the structure, body and spice of
the Shiraz.”
“I travel a lot, we drink quite widely and I still have not
seen or tasted or even heard of another blend like this.
“The fruit comes from 20 year old vines grown at 220m
altitude in the Geographe region of Western Australia.
The first vintage we made, back in 2007, just before
bottling, when we looked at the barrels we thought the
tannins were a little rustic and I said jokingly ‘it needs a
bit of Viognier to silken off the palate’.
“There were a couple of barrels of Viognier so we tried it
out with 2% and were just amazed. It lifts the colour and
gives the wine an aromatic lift too as well as texture and
silkiness to the palate.”
Plan B ‘TV’ Tempranillo Viognier 2020
Geographe
Fruit from separate vineyard patches picked
at night and fermented between 24-26C for
12 days with extended post- fermentation
maceration to optimise flavour, colour and
tannin profiles. Individual batches aged in
barrel for 60 months. Rounded off with 2%
Viognier for good measure.
Grape varieties: Tempranillo, Viognier
AU292 - 12x75cl
Plan B Frespañol Shiraz Tempranillo
2020
Frankland River
A single site Shiraz from the remote Frankland
River region of Western Australia. This wine is
an orgy of bright red berries and yummy fruit.
It’s rich, ripe and balanced - full of delicious
Frankland River Shirazy goodness, and old world
like savoury charm.
Grape varieties: Shiraz, Tempranillo
Plan B ‘GT’ Cabernet Sauvignon
Sangiovese 2018
Ferguson Valley
Dark chocolate, sour cherry, fresh plum, bay
leaf and leather spice, with background tomato
leaf tannin, a lovely medium bodied structure
and crunchy acidity. Barrel matured for 12
months in new and seasoned French oak. 75%
Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Sangiovese.
Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese
