USA - Washington State
Washington State is the second-largest wine region
in the United States. The state has 16 unique AVAs
(American Viticultural Areas), each possessing a
unique combination of climate, topography and
soils that define the aromas and flavours of locally
grown grapes and the wines crafted from them.
Washington’s growers and vintners work in
tandem to produce a combination of old world and
new world styles spanning over 70 grape varieties.
Washington has the perfect climate for growing
wine grapes, sharing the same latitude as other
famous wine regions in Europe including Burgundy
and the Rhône. This 46° parallel is the sweet spot for
growing grapes as it receives the most amount
of sunlight during the growing season.
The state has a magical balance of heat and continentality
that provides a contrast of ripeness with preserved acidity.
The cool nights keep the wines of Washington fragrant
and fresh.
The Charles & Charles range is a
collaboration founded in 2008 between
Charles Smith (K Vintners, Charles Smith
Wines) and Charles Bieler (Three Thieves,
Bieler Père et Fils).
Charles Bieler had a dream to make
world-class rosé in Washington State
and called his good friend, Charles Smith.
From here, the Charles and Charles legacy
was born.
When Charles met Charles they both
commented it was unusual to find two
‘Charles’ - the name ‘Charles’ is usually
shortened to Charlie, Chuck or Chaz in
America - so commemorated the brand
with their names.
The iconic Charles and Charles Stars &
Stripes label is a nod towards the American Legion Post No. 35 building in Waitsburg, WA (north of Walla
Walla). Charles Smith bought this building and painted it to create a conceptual art piece, its intention is
to provoke thought about the future while honouring the past.
Charles and Charles Rosé 2020/22
Columbia Valley, Washington State
Pale salmon colour, copper pink with flashes of
Fuchsia. An aromatic nose of raspberries and
cherry, a light but dynamic palate with a tangy
bright finish. All of the fruit is grown above
1,100 feet, which may not sound that high, but
in Washington only 10% of the total vineyards
planted are above that level. This elevation
ensures gentle ripening and natural acidity.

Charles and Charles Post 35 2018/19
Columbia Valley, Washington State
Aromas of black cherry, blackberry and earthy,
savoury notes of tobacco and herbs, vanilla
and cocoa. It’s an intense dark blue/purple
in colour with tremendous purity and depth.
Stainless steel fermentation to retain purity of
fruit. This is slow, small batch winemaking but
at scale. Renamed ‘Double Trouble’ from the next
vintage.
