NEW ZEALAND
three quarters
of New Zealand’s
Sauvignon blanc
is planted in
Marlborough
Vines were first planted in 1819
making New Zealand one of the
‘newer’ wine countries.
Sauvignon Blanc covers around 72%
of New Zealand’s vineyards.
Due to its location, New Zealand’s
vineyards are the first on our planet
to see the sun each day. And, also
some of the first vineyards to be
harvested every year.
The wines of New Zealand are some of the best in the
world. Despite its size, New Zealand has a thriving wine
industry and is known for producing high-quality wines,
particularly Sauvignon Blanc. The country’s cool climate
and diverse terroir also allow for a variety of wine styles
to be produced, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and
Riesling. The wine industry in New Zealand is relatively
young, with the first vineyards being planted in the late
1800s. However, it has rapidly gained recognition on the
world stage, with New Zealand wines winning numerous
awards and receiving critical acclaim.
Until the 1980’s Müller-Thurgau was dominating the
vineyards of New Zealand. But because of lower demand
and higher risk of diseases the vineyards were rebuilt
with new vines. From this day the New Zealand wines we
now know started. Most winemakers planted Sauvignon
Blanc, which is now dominating around 72% of the
vineyards in New Zealand. The number one region of
Sauvignon is Marlborough and, today three quarters of
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is planted in Marlborough
making it one of the most important regions in the
world when speaking of Sauvignon Blanc.
