AUSTRALIA
White wines
make up 45% of
all crushed
grapes. Of the
reds, Shiraz
accounts for
45%
5th largest wine-producing country
in the world.
Over 100 different grape varieties.
Home to some of the oldest vines in
the world. The oldest in Australia is
in Barossa Valley, Planted in 1843.
Full-bodied Shiraz, oaky Chardonnay, fresh Sauvignon
Blanc, and tannic Cabernet Sauvignon. These are just
a few of the many styles and grape varieties you find in
Australia. The country is mostly affected by the warm
climate although some regions like Tasmania experience
a much colder climate. In 2014 there was an almost
equal amount of red and white wine but the latest years
have seen a tendency in more production of red wine.
In the vintage of 2022, the percentage of white grapes
crushed was 45%.
The main grape in Australia is Shiraz, which in other
countries is known as Syrah. While Syrah is best known
for the wines of Cote-Rotie and Hermitage, Shiraz
produces wines with more body and dark fruit in
Australia. These wines are often easy to drink and pair
well with most sorts of food. Maybe that is the reason
why 45% of red grapes in Australia are Shiraz.
Although the general value of the grapes has fallen
the quality of the grapes has not. Even though many
winemakers report massive rainfalls and wildfires across
the country they seem to have overcome the challenges
once again. In general, the quality is consistently high
but we are looking at a cooler vintage overall.
