South Africa
The South
African wine
industry dates
back to the 17th
century when
Dutch settlers
first planted
vines.
It is possible to make fresh and
light-style wines because of the
two cooling ocean currents called
the Cape Doctor and the Benguela
Current.
Eighth largest wine producer in the
world.
South Africa has a dedicated wine
route: the Pinotage wine route
takes visitors through the wine
regions of Stellenbosch, Paarl, and
Franschhoek, where they can taste
this unique and delicious wine.
South Africa is a country that is known for its diverse
culture, beautiful landscapes, and, of course, its delicious
wines! The wine industry in South Africa has a rich
history dating back to the 17th century when Dutch
settlers planted the first vines. Today, the country is a
top producer of wine in the southern hemisphere and
is home to a wide variety of grape varieties, wine styles,
and regions.
South Africa is known for producing some of the world’s
best Chenin Blanc. This versatile grape variety is grown
in many regions across the country and is used to make
everything from dry, mineral wines to sweet dessert
wines. South Africa also makes amazing Sauvignon
Blanc and has their own grape variety called Pinotage,
which is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault.
An interesting aspect of South African wine is its use
of “bush vines”. These are grapevines that are grown
without the use of trellising or support systems and
are trained to grow along the ground. This method of
growing grapes is unique to South Africa and is used
primarily in the production of dry land wines, particularly
in the regions of Swartland and the Eastern Cape. The
use of bush vines results in lower yields but the grapes
that are produced are known for their intense flavour
and concentration. The wines produced from bush vines
are known for their complexity and character and are
highly sought after by wine enthusiasts.
