By way of anticipation I should like to eliminate certain possible
criticisms of my work in advance. In the first place, the
present argument embodies only the first part of my apologetic
system: namely, the problem of epistemological approach and
the apologetic of natural revelation. Two remarks are appropriate
in this regard: first, the rest of the system is in process of
completion and its ultimate publication will await the response
to the present work. In the final analysis a complete system of
Christian apologetics is contemplated in which there will be developed
the apologetic of special revelation and the apologetic
of synthesis. This last section will attempt to show the truth of
Christian faith comparatively by a detailed analysis of the major
religious and philosophical world views. In view of this same
partial character of the argument that follows, a specific treatment
of Christian faith itself does not appear. It will be well
therefore to clarify my position as a committed Christian, lest
any should infer my lack of faith by an absence of its acknowledgment
in the text. I am, in fact, an adherent of evangelical
orthodoxy: and the absence of any such confession in the text
that follows is due solely to the fact that the confession is not
basic to the argument as herein developed.
In the second place, it is acknowledged that in treating the
various modes of approach to Christian apologetics, I have not
been exhaustive in my analysis. Had I been writing, I should,
for example, have treated the whole development of liberal
apologetics from Schleiermacher onward, the European representatives
of presuppositionalism, and the historical background
of neo-orthodoxy. Aside from the fact that this material would
have increased the technicality of an already involved discussion,
this acknowledged omission may perhaps be overlooked
on two grounds: first, on the ground that representatives of the
main approaches have been discussed; second, on the ground
that the positive argument for my own position aptly contrasts it
with other possible viewpoints.
