The corollary of our whole discussion up to this point is
clearly this: that valid assertions concerning the nature of reality,
whether about the immediate realities of experience or
about the relation of these to the basic and ultimate reality, can
be established only in the context of an epistemology which delineates
the basic presuppositions for the possibility of knowledge
itself. In other words, epistemology, from our vantage
point as knowers, is logically prior and basic to metaphysics,
which is therefore the second object of philosophical attention,
and not the first. Before an elaboration of what we can ultimately
know is possible, there must exist a comprehensive understanding
of how we know any object whatsoever, if our
metaphysical dogmas are to transcend belief in knowledge.
Of course, there is a certain sense in which being, as a fact,
is in our experience prior to knowing: not only does our knowing
presuppose the fact or our existence as knowers, but, when
once the basis of knowledge is made clear, conclusions are
reached which indicate that the material universe (and it’s ultimate
metaphysical ground) existed long before human knowers
appeared on the cosmic scene. But this is a far different thing
from contending that our basic metaphysical beliefs must be determined
prior to any discussion of the presuppositions of possible
