Now someone will object that the destruction of life likewise<br />

be<strong>com</strong>es almost infinitely improbable: or flatly, that any arrangement<br />

of elements in a <strong>com</strong>plex universe is almost infinitely<br />

improbable from the standpoint of chance. But this is<br />

precisely the point to emphasize: namely, that any explanation<br />

whatever of the elements of the world, in terms of pure chance,<br />

is almost infinitely improbable and is therefore not an explanation<br />

that ought to be accepted by a rational mind!<br />

But horrors! We have forgotten the dice! After all, chance<br />

does explain a game of dice, doesn’t it? Yet the answer is<br />

plainly that chance does not explain a game of dice, for the only<br />

significant results emerging from such a game are those previsioned<br />

by intelligence in setting the conditions of the game itself.<br />

All the possibilities of the dice---so far as the game is<br />

concerned---originated in a conscious adaptation of means to an<br />

end; namely, in this case, the amusement of the mind (or the<br />

advancement of one’s bank account, or what have you) which<br />

results from an ignorance of the exact causal factors that produce<br />

a given <strong>com</strong>bination of the dice.<br />

Furthermore, the throwing of dice is not even a game unless the<br />

ends to be realized are pre- [[213]] scribed in advance and made<br />

possible by the conditions of the operations involved.<br />

We therefore conclude that any chance explanation of the<br />

universe, and in particular of the <strong>com</strong>plex interrelation between<br />

inorganic and organic existence, is almost infinitely improbable<br />

as an explanation. When we add to this the self-contradictory<br />

character of an assumed infinite series of motions, the improbability<br />

of a chance explanation be<strong>com</strong>es absolute. Consequently,<br />

we may affirm that a chance explanation of the fitness<br />

of the inorganic in the production and maintenance of life is absolutely<br />

improbable and that therefore such fitness is explicable<br />

only in terms of a transcendent intelligent will that endowed<br />

material elements with the necessary potentialities for their<br />

essential function in connection with the existence of the whole
