If, to escape this predicament, I retreat to the position that the categories cannot even conclude the existence of a noumenal reality, the difficulty is not actually alleviated. For either there is, or there is not, a noumenal reality distinct from the phenomenal. Now the position that there is no such noumenal reality is identical with a form of solipsism which asserts that only the succession of ideas is real. Apart from the fact that this position is itself logically untenable, 33 such a doctrine cannot deny that the categories give us no knowledge of things-inthemselves: for on this view my knowledge of things is precisely a knowledge of them as they are in themselves, since they are nothing but my experience of them in the succession of ideas. It is therefore logically absurd for the solipsist to deny noumenal knowledge. Hence, such a denial is logically possible only if one rejects solipsism and by that very fact asserts that noumenal reality does exist. But this is Kant’s original argument which has already been shown to be self-contradictory. It turns out that the very statement that the categories cannot give us a knowledge of the existence of noumenal reality suggests its own falsity. If there were no noumenal reality, and if I therefore had no knowledge of it whatever, it would never occur to me to deny the possibility of knowing such a reality. It follows that the contention is false that the categories yield no knowledge of the existence of noumena. I conclude that Kant’s limitation of the categories to the knowledge of phenomena reduces to self-contradictory skepticism and is therefore untenable. The categories do give us a knowledge of things-in-themselves. The precise mode of this knowledge will form the substance of Chapter IV of this part. (2) The preformation system must therefore be maintained, nor are Kant’s objections to it of any serious consequence. determining the number of categories; the derivation of such categories from the various types of logical judgment is just as applicable on the preformation view as it is for Kant’s own position. As for the suggestion that the categories might be valid only for me instead of being preconditions for all possible experience; not only does this point press with equal force upon Kant, but we have already shown that such a skepticism is selfcontradictory and invalid: the very statement---the categories are valid only for me---could not be true unless it were false. Even God does not snatch the categories out o the blue: if the categories are actually preconditions of intelligibility, they are just as essential for divine thought as for human. That the categories are implanted aptitudes does not impugn their absolute necessity, if only we remember that the same categories are presupposed in any intelligent experience whatever; so that their implantation proceeds according to that very necessity itself. Conclusion.---With the modifications that have now been suggested, we stand ready to defend rational empiricism as the only adequate epistemology. To such a defense we forthwith proceed.
