Nor will it be difficult to see that such an analytical presuppositionalism
is basically inconsistent with any ultimate acceptance
of the metaphysical presuppositionalism which argues
that the acceptance of a first metaphysical principle is a matter
of unjustifiable assumption: for here we are offering to show
exactly the validity and necessity of the first metaphysical principle
itself by indicating that obviously its acceptance is the
only basis on which an intelligible explanation of experience
can ultimately be given. Of course, there is a starting-point; but
it is not the assumption of the first reality: it is rather the epistemological
starting-point of rational empiricism. It may be
both interesting and comforting to hold at the same time both
that we must assume God’s existence in order to arrive at it, and
that we can show that only god’s existence postulates an adequate
explanation of reality---it may, I say, be interesting and
comforting, but it is not rational!
Categorical or experiential presuppositionalism, finally, is
the method of showing that a consistent application of the rational
categories to the totality of available data must conclude
the validity and truth of some ultimate metaphysical principle.
This procedure is similar to that of the preceding type, except
that with analytical presuppositionalism we were attempting to
test the validity of a system of thought regarded as already constructed,
whereas categorical pre- [[157]] suppositionalism attempts
a more positive approach to experience with the goal of
showing that the data available imply definitively the existence
of some ultimate real. The former approach, briefly, was a
negative method for testing the structure of a world view; while
the present approach is a method, cast in the same mold, for arriving
at that world view by a positive interpretation of experience.
Thus, for example, theism asserts that the only adequate explanation
for the intelligibility of experience is the truth of the
proposition that God exists. Some Christian thinkers, realizing
