With this assumption or hypothesis, he may be able to offer an explanation of reality, but he can never offer to establish the validity of this ultimate starting-point, since all argumentation within the system is intelligible only when one accepts the assumption itself. The same could be said with reference to the presupposition of the [[155]] naturalist, who holds that nature, as the space-time nexus, is the only and ultimate reality. To ask the naturalist to prove the validity of his assumption that nature is ultimate is to ask a meaningless question; he may be able to offer a coherent explanation of reality in terms of this ultimate assumption; but he cannot prove the assumption itself, since any argument, if he is consistent, will assume the validity of that very assumption. To call this general approach to the structure of philosophical world views by the name metaphysical presuppositionalism is therefore an appropriate designation, since the position rigorously insists that any first reality must be assumed, not proved. An equally appropriate designation is voluntaristic rationalism: voluntaristic, because the acceptance of the basic postulate is a volitional or willful act for which, in the final analysis, no rational evidence can be given, since every such argument, to be valid within the system, must rest ultimately on just this very postulate; rationalism, because, when the basic metaphysical postulate is taken as assumed, the attempt is made to show that in terms of this postulate, as applied by the basic logical laws (likewise dependent upon the ultimate postulate), a selfconsistent explanation of reality be<strong>com</strong>es possible in a degree to which it is not possible in terms of other basic postulates. Analytical or logical presuppositionalism, in the second place, is that method of testing the adequacy of a world view, however derived originally, by assuming its truth hypothetically and attempting to show, by application of proper logical analysis, whether or not its basic principles lead to a self-consistent
position that is at the same time correlated with the whole gamut of experiential data. Basically, this procedure involves, not the assumption of a metaphysical starting-point, but the assumption of an epistemological ground, <strong>com</strong>mon to all rational beings, in terms of which the adequacy of any speculative doctrine may be tested with something approaching final authority. We assume, in such an approach, a universal structure of rationality, both in the mind and in the real world---such a structure, in fact, as we have defended in our espousal of rational empiricism in Part I. In such terms, which in fact merely embody that coherence theory of truth already established, an adequate defense for a philosophical system would proceed as follows: First, it would attempt to show that all available experiential data can be explained coherently by the [[156]] basic principle or principles of the system; or at least, that this can be done more adequately in terms of these principles than in terms of any others. Second, the defense would attempt to show that the over-all structure of the system itself is internally free from self-contradiction---it must, for example, have no explanation in terms of which the simultaneous disappearance of the gingham dog and the calico cat are to be accounted for by asserting that they ate each other up---all the aspects of the system must be free from such inconsistency. Finally, such adequate defense must undertake to show that all rival systems of explanation are deficient, either by way of self-contradiction, or by way of inadequacy in the explanation of the total gamut of experience. Surely, we can argue, in terms acceptable to all rational beings and on the grounds of the rational empiricism we have already espoused, that a system which is satisfactory with respect to these three criteria is the system that ought to be accepted by the rational man. Such, precisely, is the drive of our defense for Christian theism.
