(2) On the cosmic level,<br />

(a) The existence of natural evil may likewise constitute a part<br />

of the just retribution for moral evil as <strong>com</strong>mitted by human<br />

selves, so that such natural evil embodies, to some extent, the<br />

reaction of divine law against the abuse of freedom.<br />

(i) This by no means implies that every instance of suffering in<br />

human life is a retribution for specific moral evil: nothing could<br />

be further from the truth.<br />

(ii) Pain and suffering are often conspicuously maladjusted with<br />

relation to retribution for moral evil.<br />

(b) What our assertion does mean is that nature is itself in a<br />

state of arrested development because of the <strong>com</strong>plex influence<br />

of moral evil on the natural order, and that a part of the result of<br />

this arrested development is of judicial and punitive significance,<br />

as related to a race of men who, being all tinged with<br />

moral evil, stand in a certain solidarity of revolt against God.<br />

(3) Summary: thus the divine law reacts against the evil effects<br />

of freedom by resulting in a retribution which consists partly in<br />

the alteration of moral character itself, partly in that experience<br />

of pain and suffering which results from natural causes in their<br />

<strong>com</strong>plex interaction with the moral.<br />
