Therefore, in addition to conventional solid absorbers, <strong>LCLS</strong> plans to use a gas absorber cell,<br />

using high-pressure puff valves to introduce the absorbing gas into the path of the coherent FEL<br />

photons (see Figure 9.6) [5]. The axial dimensions of the chamber and the number of valve<br />

nozzles must be adequate to allow a sufficient thickness of the gas to provide two or more orders<br />

of magnitude of attenuation over the 800-4000 eV range. The combined axial and transverse<br />

dimensions are determined by the requirement of maintaining an average vessel pressure of<br />
