Confronti Poetici / Poetic Comparisons
Edited and translated by Luigi Fontanella
The purpose of this “rubrica” is to feature two poets, an
American and an Italian, who in the opinion of the editor share
affinities or embody different approaches to poetry. The editor will
select one poem for each poet and provide both the Italian and the
English translations, thus acting as a bridge between them. In this
manner two poets, whose approach to poetry may be quite different,
will be conversing through the translator.
For this issue I present a poem by John Ashbery and a poem by
Carlo Felice Colucci. I would like to thank, for my translations,
Alessandro Carrera for his helpful suggestions.
John Ashbery, nato a Rochester, New York nel 1927, autore
libro di narrativa, A Nest of Ninnies; uno di teatro, Three Plays; e uno
di saggistica, Reported Sightings: Art Chronicles 1957-1987 - , può
considerarsi senz’altro fra i maggiori poeti americani viventi. Oltre
angloamericana a Bard College. Attualmente vive a New York City
e a Hudson, New York.
fulminanti messe a fuoco, originali combinazioni verbali e immagini
nelle sue rigature impreviste, nelle sue allucinate contraddizioni,
all’interno delle quali Ashbery sa individuare il filo enigmatico,
ambiguo o allusivo che le lega. Nelle opere più recenti, come Your
