Per rendere conto di questa differenza di grammaticalità Wasow ha <strong>in</strong>trodotto<br />
il term<strong>in</strong>e Weak Crossover (WCO) (per 2a) <strong>in</strong> contrapposizione a Strong Crossover<br />
(SCO) (per 2b).<br />
1.2 Le Prime Analisi<br />
Sullo sfondo delle prime proposte di analisi del WCO occorre tenere presente i risultati<br />
raggiunti negli studi sulla pronom<strong>in</strong>alizzazione a ritroso. Il paradigma di<br />
Pronom<strong>in</strong>alizzazione a Ritroso (Backward Pronom<strong>in</strong>alization - BP) è stato scoperto<br />
dai lavori di Dougherty (1969); Langacker (1969); Postal (1970); Ross (1969).<br />
Un’esemplificazione del paradigma è riportata <strong>in</strong> (3):<br />
(3) a. Johni stays when you ask himi to leave.<br />
b. * Hei stays when you ask Johni to leave.<br />
c. When you ask John toi leave, hei stays.<br />
d. When you ask himi to leave, Johni stays.<br />
(Ross, 1967, 1986)<br />
La generalizzazione sulla BP raggiunta da questi studiosi è essenzialmente la<br />
seguente: 4<br />
(4) Se un pronome è alla s<strong>in</strong>istra di un NP, allora questo NP può servire da antecedente<br />
del pronome solo se il pronome è dom<strong>in</strong>ato da una frase subord<strong>in</strong>ata<br />
che non dom<strong>in</strong>a l’NP.<br />

Questa generalizzazione tuttavia va estesa per coprire i casi <strong>in</strong> cui il pronome è<br />
<strong>in</strong>cassato <strong>in</strong> un s<strong>in</strong>tagma nom<strong>in</strong>ale (Jackendoff, 1972; Lasnik, 1976; Wasow, 1979)<br />
come mostrano i dati <strong>in</strong> (5):<br />
(5) a. The portrait of hisi mother always depressed Johni.<br />
b. The story about himi that was mak<strong>in</strong>g the rounds cost Johni many<br />
friends.<br />
Wasow (1972) propone dunque di modificare la def<strong>in</strong>izione <strong>in</strong> (4) per <strong>in</strong>cludere<br />
anche i dati <strong>in</strong> (5):<br />
