A GIRLS’ GUIDE TO PALESTINEAnetta Mona Chiøa & Lucia TkáčovaAnetta Mona Chiøa and Lucia Tkáčova spent about two months at the endof 2011 on a residency in Ramallah, invited by ArtSchool Palestine. Theirtext below is an account of their experience in Palestine, as foreigners,as privileged short-term visitors, as Europeans and as women. It does notscan the art scene in Ramallah, it does not provide an inventory of institutionsnor a review of local cultural trends. Instead, it testifies on situationsin which the artistic approach as such is put to the test; it talks about warand occupation, it reveals the rooted patriarchy, similar in its forms of manifestationirrespective of religious customs or political codes; also, it transportsthe frustrations and anger born when facing such a context, intoanother one, where physically and mentally it is apparently much easier tosurvive, but where the menace of absolute violence is always near, readyto take over. While the text was conceived as a personal e-mail addressedto me, Anetta Mona Chiøa & Lucia Tkáčova agreed eventually on having itpublished in the magazine, responding thus to the invitation of summinguptheir experience in Palestine for IDEA’s readers. We have this inner reluctance, sort of a block that prevents us to process it mentally, to outgrow ourfeelings and to take a stand that would be more than mere impressions. We’re so full of images and memories we smuggled over theborders, hiding them from the hawkish eyes of the securities, butwe can’t find a way how to get them out.We landed in the “Holy Land“ briefed with prefabricated picturesand instilled with Middle East image depictions (of boys throwingstones at tanks, of veiled women weeping over corpses) and werealized everything is different, everything is worse. The war doesn’tlook like a war, it’s more hidden, more arbitrary and obscured. We spent the first two weeks stimulating our endorphins by eatingtons of baklava, food-ing our brains up and wishing to survive thepunch of the new reality. There wasn’t a day without going throughthe whole rainbow of feelings, from defiance and rage through guiltto compassion and pity. But then, after a while, you look at thingsaround you without seeing them, you listen without hearing, you actwithout doing anything and live without thinking of the impact ofyour moves.Things like:– teenage soldiers in ill fitting uniforms and pitiful attitudes playingwith machine guns– the (ever increasing number of) checkpoints which prove theAuthorities not only rule over your space, but also steal your time.Watching fathers robbed of their dignity and grandmothers turnedinto targets of fun only nourishes the seeds of hatred.– streets covered up with fading posters of “martyrs“ (suicidebombers)– ever growing number of illegal settlements, inhabited mostlyby paid Eastern-Europeans (50,000 dollars upon arrival, house witha swimming pool and two guns), what a shame!– the 9 m high wall (double the height of the Berlin Wall) snakingon the horizon and cutting villages in half– olive orchards growing for centuries being cut down overnightby settlers, leaving a stubble on the rocky hills– the testimony of a pregnant female prisoner being beaten by theguards till the baby fell out of her– military night raids when sleepy boys in pyjamas are dragged outof homes and never return– metal nets stretched over the streets of Hebron, so the settlers whooccupied the first floors don’t kill the Palestinians with the trash theythrow out of their windows (used diapers, menstruation pads, a brokenchair, rotting food, old toys, a stone flower pot – this one almostfell through)– people locked up in cities and villages for decades, risking imprisonmentif they’d try to visit relatives– airplane raids at any hour– curfews– children without childhood, working hard to feed families whiletheir fathers smoke all days longbecome “normal“. Everyday needs blur out the desperation. Miseryand anger are suppressed by routine, revolting events generatemechanic immunity. You still get sleepless nights (literally) trying tofigure out how you can solve the Middle East conflict. And yet, youare always reminded that this conflict is not yours and it never will be.You remain forever a white chick, a spoiled visitor, a lucrative catch, ashow-off companion, an easy fuck. All of the men want to talk to you, constantly, everywhere, even though listening is the last thing they’ddo. Palestinian men love to have a freebie ride on “western“ girls, butthey always end up marrying Palestinian virgins. If we were men, wecould have become freedom fighters, foreign comrades, VittorioArrigoni or a Palestinian version of Subcomandante Marcos. As girls,we only stayed the accents of a street, the targets for dirty talk, thepoint of rehearsing the lines they heard in the smuggled westernporn, an exercise butt for exotic try-outs (stuff they’d never try onthe local chicks), a playground of their masculinity.135
