Intermediate Chinese I<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Builds upon the fundamentals of Chinese grammar<br />

studied in CHIN 101 and 102 and introduces students<br />

to translation. Intensive practice in oral skills and the<br />

development of an increased command of reading and<br />

writing Chinese characters. Introduction of 450 new words<br />

into the speaking and listening vocabulary and 200 new<br />

characters into the reading and writing vocabulary.<br />

Fall semester only.<br />

Prerequisite: CHIN 102 or equivalent, or consent of<br />

instructor.<br />

Intermediate Chinese II<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Strengthens and improves Chinese language skills: speaking,<br />

listening, reading, and writing. This course emphasizes<br />

grammar, idiomatic expression, writing short paragraphs<br />

in Chinese, and translation skills. Introduction of 450 new<br />

words into the speaking and listening vocabulary and 250<br />

characters into the reading and writing vocabulary.<br />

Spring semester only.<br />

This course is for American Chinese learners who have<br />

reached an advanced level of Chinese language in the U.S.<br />

and are now learning Chinese in China. The content is<br />

based on the reality of the contemporary Chinese society<br />

and has a close relationship with foreign students’ daily life<br />

and studies in China.<br />

Taught in Beijing, China.<br />

Modern Chinese Literature<br />

This course is a survey of modern Chinese literature from<br />

1918 to the present. It will focus on the fiction, poetry, and<br />

essays during the three periods (1918-1949, 1949-1976,<br />

since 1976) in the 20th century.<br />

Taught in Chinese in Beijing, China.<br />
