EDUC 404<br />

Science in the Elementary Curriculum<br />

2 Semester Hours<br />

This course is designed to provide opportunities for<br />

prospective teachers to develop their understanding and<br />

ability to teach science to culturally diverse students in<br />

the elementary grades. Particular emphasis is placed on<br />

strategies which will accommodate linguistically diverse<br />

students. Laboratory type activities provide opportunities<br />

for the students to investigate a variety of methods<br />

related to teaching science using a conceptual approach.<br />

Investigations stress processes, attitudes, values, and<br />

technological relationships that are effective in multicultural<br />

and multilingual classrooms. Focus is on the interaction<br />

between the teacher, students, and the discipline of science,<br />

and how the student is actively involved in learning through<br />

a constructivist and experiential approach.<br />

Lab fee required.<br />

EDUC 405<br />

Mathematics in the Elementary Curriculum<br />

2 Semester Hours<br />

This course is designed to provide opportunities for<br />

prospective teachers to develop their understanding and<br />

ability to teach mathematics in the elementary grades.<br />

Particular emphasis is placed on laboratory type activities<br />

where students investigate a variety of methods related to<br />

teaching math using a conceptual approach and utilizing<br />

strategies which are successful with culturally and<br />

linguistically diverse learners. Focus is on the development<br />

of lessons and long-term plans to actively involve the learner<br />

in all of the math strands through experiential activities.<br />

Lab fee required.<br />

EDUC 406<br />

Social Studies in the Elementary Curriculum<br />

2 Semester Hours<br />

This course is designed to provide opportunities for<br />

prospective teachers to develop professional knowledge<br />

and competence for teaching social studies. This course<br />

deals with purpose, content, procedures, and organization<br />

of instruction in those curricular areas as prescribed in the<br />

California State adopted framework. The current trends and<br />

social issues affecting the teacher’s selection of instructional<br />

approaches and the selection of instructional resources<br />

are explored. All state-mandated content areas, including<br />

culturally and linguistically diverse teaching techniques and<br />

methods for social studies, are included.<br />

EDUC 409<br />

Literacy in the Curriculum<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course is designed to provide opportunities for<br />

prospective teachers to develop their understanding<br />

and ability to teach reading/language arts to all students<br />

in the elementary grades. Particular emphasis will be<br />

placed on strategies which will accommodate culturally<br />

and linguistically diverse learners. Consideration is given<br />

to the procedures, skills development, organizations,<br />

systems of instruction, and instructional materials utilized<br />

in the development of an effective balanced and integrated<br />

approach to the teaching of reading/language arts instruction<br />

in the elementary school that supports literacy development.<br />

This course meets the requirements of section 44755 of the<br />

California Education Code. This course will be preparation<br />

for the RICA (Reading Instruction Competency Assessment)<br />

based on the following reading domains:<br />

Domain I Organizing Reading Instruction Based<br />

on Ongoing Assessment<br />

Domain II Phonological and other Linguistic<br />

Domain III<br />

Processes Related to Reading<br />

Developing Reading Comprehension<br />

and Promoting Independent Reading<br />

Domain IV Supporting Reading through Oral and<br />

Written Language<br />

Prerequisite: Special approval required.<br />

EDUC 410<br />

Elementary Directed Teaching<br />

9 Semester Hours<br />

Full-time supervised teaching in two culturally diverse public<br />

elementary schools; seminar sessions held throughout the<br />

semester, which include instruction in art, music, and<br />

physical education. Offered on a Credit/No Credit basis<br />

only.<br />

Admission by special approval.<br />

EDUC 412<br />

Secondary Directed Teaching<br />

9 Semester Hours<br />

Full-time supervised teaching in one culturally diverse<br />

public middle and/or high school; seminar sessions held<br />

throughout the semester support the student in successfully<br />

completing his or her student teaching.<br />

Offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only.<br />

Admission by special approval.
