the impact of the economy upon settlement, agriculture,<br />

transportation, and industrial growth in Asian countries and<br />

regions.<br />

This course covers various issues that contemporary Asia,<br />

the most politically, economically, and socially dynamic<br />

region in the world today, is facing. Some of the issues to<br />

be dealt with are: economic uncertainties in Asian nations,<br />

population, human rights, reunification, and others.<br />

This class will examine mythology and folktales from various<br />

Asian traditions: China, Japan, Korea, and India. The<br />

reading materials will be examined through psychological,<br />

philosophical, and cultural approaches. The topics for<br />

discussion include creation myths, heaven and hell, the<br />

mythic hero, metamorphosis, and immortality.<br />

Modern Asian Fiction<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course examines twentieth-century Chinese and<br />

Japanese fiction through the study of novels, short stories,<br />

novellas, biographies, diaries, and film. The class will also<br />

study major literary trends and movements.<br />

Women in Asian Literature<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course is a cross-cultural study of Asian women through<br />

the analysis of literary works including drama, fiction, and<br />

diaries in both classical and modern literature in China,<br />

Japan, Korea, and India. The class will examine patterns of<br />

sexism, women as literary subjects and personae, as well<br />

as images of women in various sociosexual roles.
