EDUC 485<br />

Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary Schools<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This methodology course provides prospective secondary<br />

social studies teachers the opportunity to develop lesson<br />

plans and assessments incorporating state and national<br />

standards and pedagogically sound teaching methods.<br />

Drawing on social studies concepts, case studies, and<br />

cross-cultural activities will practice basic analysis skills in<br />

history and social studies. Students will develop classroom<br />

activities enhancing critical thinking and study skills, as<br />

well as interrelating ideas within and across history/social<br />

science and other subject areas. Emphasis will be placed<br />

on designing instructional activities to engage all learners.<br />

Prerequisite: Special approval required.<br />

Trends in Teaching English in the Secondary Schools<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course addresses the concerns and needs of future<br />

English teachers. Major areas covered include developing<br />

a multicultural curriculum for all students, creating lesson<br />

plans, examining meaning making strategies for reading,<br />

instructing the writing process, teaching grammar in context,<br />

looking at methods of authentic classroom assessment, and<br />

building classroom portfolios.<br />

Trends in the Teaching of Secondary Science<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

This course covers programs, guidelines, and practices<br />

in the individualization of instruction with emphasis on<br />

culturally and linguistically diverse student needs in relation<br />

to science and uses of technology; continuous progress<br />

curriculum in science; and uses of individualized science<br />

labs.<br />

Prerequisite: Special approval required.<br />

Trends in the Teaching of Secondary Math<br />

This course covers programs, guidelines, and practices<br />

in the individualization of instruction with emphasis on<br />

culturally and linguistically diverse student needs in relation<br />

to mathematics; uses of technology and continuous progress<br />

curriculum.<br />

Leadership Seminar I<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

This course is designed to develop student leaders’<br />

understanding of the basic concepts of personal and group<br />

leadership development. Participants will define an issue<br />

facing student leaders and identify a theoretical framework<br />

to address the issue. The class integrates readings, written<br />

reflection, in-class exercises, and a group project.<br />

Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and concurrent<br />

leadership position in a student organization.<br />

Leadership Seminar II<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

This course develops student leaders’ understanding<br />

of the basic concepts of personal and group leadership<br />

development. Participants will apply a theoretical<br />

framework to an issue facing student leaders, create an<br />

implementation plan, and develop an evaluation process.<br />

The class integrates readings, written reflection, in-class<br />

exercises, and a group project.<br />

Prerequisites: Permission of instructor and concurrent<br />

leadership position in a student organization.<br />

EDUC 491<br />

Leadership Seminar III<br />

1 Semester Hour<br />

A capstone leadership experience for advanced student<br />

leaders, this class combines readings, in-class activities, and<br />

experiential involvement as a peer educator with research<br />

and creation of a comprehensive leadership portfolio.<br />

Prerequisites: Permission of instructor, successful completion<br />

of EDUC 489 or 490, and concurrent leadership position in<br />

a student organization.<br />

EDUC 492<br />

Behavior and Classroom Management Techniques for<br />

Teachers<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Explores current, alternative approaches to classroom<br />

discipline, management, and organization. Focuses on<br />

how teacher behavior, the learning task, and the classroom<br />

environment affect student behavior.<br />
