Japanese<br />

The courses develop listening, speaking, reading, and<br />

writing skills using the direct method. Grammar points are<br />

explained in English. The student is provided an opportunity<br />

to practice conversation with native speakers to further<br />

improve oral skills. Selected topics are presented to enhance<br />

awareness and understanding of Japanese culture.<br />

JAPN 101<br />

Elementary Japanese I<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

An introduction to the fundamentals of Japanese,<br />

emphasizing listening and speaking skills. Students learn<br />

to ask and answer simple questions in the present and<br />

past tense. Introduces reading and writing of Hiragana,<br />

Katakana, and approximately 30 Kanji along with essentials<br />

of Japanese culture and custom.<br />

Fall semester only.<br />

JAPN 102<br />

Elementary Japanese II<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

A continuation of JAPN 101. Review of Katakana and<br />

approximately 60 new Kanji are introduced. Useful<br />

grammatical patterns emphasizing the use of adjectives<br />

and verb conjugations. Practical patterns such as polite<br />

commands, permissions, prohibitions, and progressive<br />

forms are studied. Students continue to learn fundamentals<br />

of Japanese culture and lifestyle.<br />

Spring semester only.<br />

Prerequisite: JAPN 101 or equivalent, or consent of<br />

instructor.<br />
