Elementary Italian II<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Emphasizing communicative and linguistic skills, this<br />

course is a continuation of ITAL 101. The principal goal of<br />

the curriculum is to develop the four basic language skills—<br />

listening, speaking, reading, and writing—in classes that<br />

are taught exclusively in Italian. New grammatical material<br />

introduced includes direct and indirect object pronouns,<br />

imperfect and future tenses, and the use of negative<br />

expressions. Students increase their vocabulary through<br />

further study of Italian culture past and present.<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 101 or equivalent.<br />

Beginning Conversational Italian<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 102 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Intermediate Italian<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Emphasizing communicative and linguistic skills, this course<br />

is a continuation of ITAL 102. The goal of the curriculum<br />

is to develop the four basic language skills—listening,<br />

speaking, reading, and writing—at the appropriate level of<br />

proficiency in classes that are taught exclusively in Italian.<br />

New materials covered include the subjunctive modes,<br />

hypothetical sentences, double pronouns, comparisons,<br />

and superlatives. Students familiarize themselves with<br />

additional aspects of Italian history, culture, and politics.<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 102 or equivalent.<br />

ITAL 204<br />

Advanced Italian<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Emphasizing communicative and linguistic skills, this<br />

course reviews the material studied in ITAL 101, 102,<br />

and 203. The goal of the curriculum is to develop the four<br />

basic language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and<br />

writing—at the appropriate level of proficiency in classes<br />

that are taught exclusively in Italian. Increased emphasis<br />

is placed on writing assignments, working with multimedia<br />

materials in Italian, and reading selected texts written for<br />

native speakers of Italian.<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 203 or equivalent.<br />

Italian Literature of the Fourteenth Century<br />

3 Semester Hours<br />

Providing an overview of the historical context in which<br />

Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio emerged, the course<br />

introduces students to some of the most famous works in<br />

the Italian literary tradition. It also develops the students’<br />

ability to write critical essays in Italian, sharpening their<br />

skills in literary and cultural analysis.<br />

An examination of the diverse forms of cultural expression<br />

in contemporary Italy, including literature, cinema, theatre,<br />
