<strong>Electric</strong>ity requires a conducting path to flow along, and in space those paths are formed from the plasma that<br />

we know already exists there. The challenge therefore is to properly understand plasma’s ability not to instantly<br />

mix to become electrically neutral, as we are told it does, but instead to form in regions that have isolating<br />

double-layer barriers between them that allow powerful charge differences to build up. Where these different<br />

electrical potentials exist then conditions are right for currents to flow, and when they do flow, magnetic fields<br />

are produced to surround and spread out from the paths those currents take. These paths are what we <strong>of</strong>ten now<br />

visibly see as twisted filaments in space - they are Birkeland currents.<br />

The acknowledgement by astro-science <strong>of</strong> the reality <strong>of</strong> Birkeland currents, despite only being a tailored<br />

admission to suit its own aspirations, is actually an unintended recognition that electric currents do flow in<br />

space, and as we have discussed, this is the case at every conceivable scale. We know that the fundamental<br />

electromagnetic force is 10 39 times more powerful than the force <strong>of</strong> gravity and that its effects on plasma are<br />

shown from laboratory experiment to be upwardly scalable by 10 14 times. What results, therefore, is a situation<br />

where ionised matter is being collected together in concentrations that span vast distances, the dimensions<br />

<strong>of</strong> which we can only attempt to imagine. These regions <strong>of</strong> concentrated plasma subsequently interact with<br />

each other dynamically through electromagnetic forces, the power <strong>of</strong> which we can only wonder at and so<br />

represent with numbers that have many trailing zeros. The network <strong>of</strong> Birkeland currents that therefore exists<br />

throughout our universe as the cosmic power distribution system, supplies energy to galaxies, stars and all the<br />

other energetic phenomena we observe. All <strong>of</strong> these, fundamentally, are various plasma structures that form and<br />

re-form within a cosmic ocean <strong>of</strong> ionised dust and gas to give us the fabric, objects and events we observe that<br />

together present to us our powerfully dynamic but apparently motionless universe. Within all this, and closer<br />

to our human scale <strong>of</strong> appreciation, the relatively minuscule bodies <strong>of</strong> planets and moons are moved around by<br />

gravity, that is yet to be fully understood. It is only when these bodies approach each other that electrical forces<br />

dominate and they interact spectacularly by discharge through the plasma medium <strong>of</strong> space that surrounds them.<br />

Happily, it seems that such electrical exchanges serve to change orbits in such a way as to restore peace among<br />

the planets.<br />

Keeping the scalability <strong>of</strong> plasma energy and behaviour in mind, we find evidence <strong>of</strong> space being electric right<br />

in front <strong>of</strong> our eyes when we look at how comets visually appear and how they behave. These occasional visitors<br />

to the inner region <strong>of</strong> the solar system may open the door for us to everything else electric. The tantalising data<br />

now collected around them may turn out to be the seed from which a breakthrough will sprout as evidence to<br />

the electrical nature <strong>of</strong> our universe. Comets are solid bodies isolated electrically from their surroundings by<br />

a double layer barrier formed by their own charge level and that <strong>of</strong> their oppositely charged environment. For<br />

most <strong>of</strong> their long elliptical journey far from the Sun they are negatively charged bodies, so their spectacular<br />

visual and physical behaviours as they fly through the rapidly increasing positive charge that surrounds the Sun<br />

can be accounted for as resulting from the inevitable electric discharges that take place. It is also during this<br />

inner solar system journey that the fracturing, cratering, sculpting and erosion <strong>of</strong> comets takes place.<br />
