In chapter one I mentioned some <strong>of</strong> the issues we have with the standard model. I will expand on these here in<br />
summary form to suggest that many <strong>of</strong> them have arisen from adventurous assumption and a myopic approach<br />
to a particular line <strong>of</strong> theory throughout the 1900s. I will then add a few issues that come from more recent<br />
findings. The intention is to show clearly the reason for the state <strong>of</strong> great puzzlement that a growing number<br />
<strong>of</strong> scientists, researchers and interested members <strong>of</strong> the public feel these days about the attitude displayed by<br />
astro-science when issues that confront their pet theories are raised.<br />
Astro-science has been almost halted intellectually by fundamental questions for which it cannot produce good<br />
answers. The typical response is to ignore, or with the wielded hammer <strong>of</strong> their superior intellectual position,<br />
belittle or even attack those who present these questions. Meanwhile, the world moves on and other scientists<br />
who do not suffer from constipated thinking are building a case around the questions in play. As you progress<br />
through this chapter, please do not feel you must understand all the detail; explanations for many <strong>of</strong> the basics<br />
will come later. The objectives <strong>of</strong> this chapter are threefold: to act as a consolidation <strong>of</strong> the main issues; to<br />
highlight the serious implications they represent; and to open the door to alternative thinking.<br />
Dark matter and dark energy are said to account for the structure <strong>of</strong> the universe and validate the claim that it is<br />
expanding. There is much room to wonder about this …<br />
First, in the case <strong>of</strong> spiral galaxies, we are assured that the total gravity produced by conveniently placed dark<br />
matter, plus the galaxy’s normal matter and that <strong>of</strong> the supposed super-massive Black Holes at their centres,<br />
is enough to explain how they hold themselves together and behave as they do. Why then does a typical spiral<br />
galaxy appear like a revolving solid disk <strong>of</strong> stars rather than the stars in its outer regions being seen to orbit more<br />
slowly? If gravity really is in play here, then given the way its influence is shown to reduce with distance, spiral<br />
galaxies should revolve more like froth does on the surface <strong>of</strong> your c<strong>of</strong>fee as you stir it in your cup. It would be<br />
fast on the inside and slow on the outside, with the outermost stars even trying to fly away!<br />
A larger scale contradiction also exists here. On one side we have the claim that everything is flying away from<br />
everything else and that the universe is expanding, and on the other side we are told that some galaxies are<br />
actually colliding! When this was first found, astro-science pleaded ignorance and did not address the issue,<br />
for they could not, and despite all the plausible mumbo-jumbo that you hear, they still cannot. In addition to<br />
this, why do we observe groupings <strong>of</strong> galaxies that appear to be connected by thread-like structures? Surely, no<br />
groups <strong>of</strong> galaxies would exist if all matter was initially dispersed by an enormous Big Bang explosion!<br />
